The AMD 64 x2 4200 says 2x521kb and the 4400 says 2x1mb cache. Is that going to be a noticable difference for $100 difference in price?

Besides more heat more power w 4400? hardly any perfromance difference like 3% max in certain apps only.. Is 3% worth 25% more money? i would'nt advise it.. But then i'd get the 3800 anyway and make into a 4600 for free.

Well, for what it's worth, the recent Cnet dual core shootout identified the 4400+ as the best price value given its performance. I agree, but I'm biased :).

If you are a server, then the extra cache is so worth it. But games are designed to depend more on speed than amount of memory, whether it is RAM or L2 cache, because they are constantly changing and reacting to you and other forces (other online players). So for you, the 4200 would be the cost-effective choice. Overclock it a little and it will easily make up for any performance lost in games.
