Is there really a quality difference between +/- DVD burners?

There are quite a few good deals out there. But what am I missing out on if I choose a Pacific Digital instead of a Plextor.

NOTE: Feel free to insert any minor brand (i.e. Khypermedia, MicroAdvantage, etc...) in place of Pacific Digital... And any major brand (i.e. TDK, Sony, etc...) in place of Plextor.

i have an emprex (rebadged BTC) 4x dual burner.. on an external case (USB2/Firewire) and so far it hasnt let me down on few burns

i find the issue is that low quality media does effect it.. the great quality (fry's) stuff doesnt burn right. Works fine with memorex and tdk.

I don't think you're missing out on much of anything IMO. I think type of media plays a lot bigger role. Strangely my dvd players in the house and the one in the car seem to prefer the cheap CMC over more expensive RicohJPN when burned using Kypermedia rebadged Benq.

The pickups are the major differences. Only a few people make the chipsets on the drives themselves and they are pretty similar (although not as similar as they will be in a couple years).

I have a 4x liteon dual format burner that I picked up for $99 canadian. It's sweet. No complaints. In fact, it does better than my roommate's sony 4x dual format but then he buys cheap DVDs by the spindle for his mod chipped consoles.

I still have a plextor 2x scsi recorder that works. My latest 708a is awesome. Had to get it because my thinkpad will only read dvd-r which i have to use to make dvd image backups for it. The best part is you can use Plextools, a total drag and drop prog from plextor europe. Will only work with Plextor drives. That alone is worth it. You will throw away all other cd/dvd recording software like Roxio etc., after trying it.
