Is there really a need to run a faster CPU for office related application?

Hey Folks,

I built 3 PCs for my wife's office using stuff I had lying around. Actually, I built her box last year using a ECS/Sempron 2800 (1.8 ghz) Socket A combo that FRY's sold last year for cheap. That rig has 2 sticks of budget Kingston 512mb RAM.

Recently, I built a file server using an old Biostar mobo and Socket A 1.1 ghz CPU with 256 mb RAM that was used to power my MAME cabinet. Lastly, I built another desktop using another FRY's ECS/Duron 1.6ghz combo with 512mb that was unused because I bought on impulse.

Question is: Are these machines adequate running Web, Word, Excel, Peachtree, and Quickbooks? They seem to run fine. Or should I upgrade to to low end Socket 754 Athlon 64s? Upgrade memory instead? Keep in mind the file server is only used to hold data only.

Ive been using MS Office @home and @work going back to the Pentium Classic. Of course I wouldnt run my Office 2003 (which I got free from Mircrosoft btw :) - thank you hot deals!) using a P1 but they seem to be designed for the average platform.

Your current platform seems adequate to me, unless you are running very large, forumula filled worksheets that do intense recalculations (like the one I use for ebay). Then a cheap upgrade certainly wouldnt be a bad investment, especially if you can recoup a portion of it liquidating the old hardware.

As you've said, they run fine, and so they should ;)

Enjoy not spending more money while having perfectly adequate office performance :D
