Is there really a difference between an Optical Mouse and a "Laser" mouse or is that

I prefer optical led. Very accurate great for FPS games. My last 3 mice have been optical. I just got Steel Series Rival. I highly recommend this mouse for palm grip users.

There are two basic flavors of opticals - laser and LED. So the answer to your question is, a laser mouse is an optical mouse.

Different technology, similar results. For a computer mouse the feel in your hand and the button locations are way more important than laser vs optical.

Most laser mice have a higher DPI sensitivty and polling rate also.

From my experience, laser won't work as well on weird surfaces. My g500 will work on anything, even glass.

Except when my mouse pad is dirty, then it won't work.
