Is there Powernow type program available for Athlon XP desktop systems?

We have recently upgraded 25 systems in a work area from Celeron 466 to Athlon XP2500 with A7N8X deluxe mainboards and have found that the heat generated from the systems has considerably increased with the existing air conditioning system previously being able to keep the room around 7-10 degrees cooler than it can now.

I'm after any software cooling solutions (hopefully cheap/freeware) that are stable under W2K that can reduce the temperature and power consumption of the processors.

We have underclocked them to 1900 (fsb133) to reduce heat, it has made a difference but we're really after something that can bring it down dramatically like Intel's Speedstep or AMD's Powernow solutions.

Any idea's?

I remember that you might be able to by shorting one of the L bridges on the processor. Then there are some released that have automatic speed control.

I did wish to undervolt too however the BIOS did not allow it, minimum it is allowing is 1.65v.

I dont want to tamper with the CPU jumpers for warranty and stability reasons, let alone 25 of them :)

We're after the speed of the new CPU's, we tried the 100fsb, that made it cooler yet again but the systems were too slow. A long time ago someone mentioned to me a software cooling solution was available however I've trawlled google and found nothing, hence I'm hoping i'm not looking for something that does not exist. From what I remember of the conversation, it would send halt (??) signals to the processor, stopping it temporarily and cutting power consumption. We're mainly after power cuts while the system is inactive so it can even be a screen saver or the like.

I have found that running MSI's CoolerXP in the background as a service (with Idle priority) really helped temps. I believe it uses a rarely known feature of the Athlon processors which shuts down half of the core and FSB.

Check to see if your motherboards supports the S2K Bus Disconnect option. This option makes the Athlon XP's Halt functionality actually useful in reducing power dissipation when the CPU is running at low or idle usage.

Cannot find a DL location for the MSI CoolerXP software, it'd probably be locked to MSI products anyway.

Asus does not have a software cooler that I can find on their site for the A7N8X mainboard :(

$30US per machine for 25 machines for cpuidle is more than it would cost to upgrade the air conditioning, we certainly would spend it on the building rather than software, after the running cost of electricity, we'd break even in a couple of years if we were to buy the software instead.

Budman, thanks for the link and info.

Tomorrow I'll try editing the software, I DLed it here at home and its beyond my scope of understanding PC's.

We would need 25 copies to remain legal, we can't just buy one copy and install it on all machines :p
