Everyone talks about how this generation is the absolute last for AGP. Is there any truth to this though - ie: confirmation from ATI or Nvidia that they will only poduce PCIE cards? It seems the only requirement is getting the bridge chips in to do the PCIE to AGP translation.

I ask mainly because I'm about to bite the bullet on SOME card, only because I know that the last of a generation usually depreciates in value less, meaning if I was interested in picking one up later the prices will suck even moreso because it won't be that much cheaper considering how "old" it will be. But if we will see some G80s appear in AGP, or the R600 comes to AGP I may change my mind (and i'm sure with something as strong as the R600 i should be able to get probably geforce 66XX preformance levels with their crappy linux drivers which is still a step up from what i have ;))

So whats the consensus: is this really the last gen for AGP?

Possibly mid range cards will be made in AGP, probably low end cards will be made in AGP, unlikely high end will be seen in AGP.

Hmm I guess the questino would be whether any mid range derivatives of the G80 would be faster than the current "high end" for AGP which compries of the 7600GT 7800GS and ATI's offereings...

And since we still don't know anything about the next generation, i guess i get to play the game of wait and see :)

If those high end parts are any indication of what we should be expecting, then this still should be fun for us mid range AGPers ;)

if its only low end though....bleh

Core 2 Duo is out, how long are you guys gonna wait before ditching AGP?

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but as long as you arent keeping up with the times, dont expect high end cards to be available. I think 6800/8xx series cards are proving to be AGP's last generation with truly high end cards.

Just skip a video upgrade and get yourselves a nice new Core 2 Duo setup. That way, you'll be in a far better position to think about video upgrades and stop throwing money into a dead tech.

Dear Matt2,

i am also one of those beeing shy to upgrade the system:

I am running

aopen cube
centrino 2ghz passiv
1gb ram
6800 128mb passiv

and am considering the same 'upgrade to the last agp train' move.

Updating the system would financially not mean skipping one but more like two graphics cards.

Would you consider a upgrade noticeable in 3d performance if i stuck a 7900gs agp in?
Or is the system cpu limited at 1280x1024?

Marco

Considering last gens cards only really made it to the mid level. The best I would imagine you will see in AGP is entry level boards.

I was under the impression that Dx10 cards could not be implemented on an AGP interface. Is there any logical reason for that to be?

it would be a noticable difference, but definately not one that I would pay $300 for, considering a PCIE 7900GTO or X1900XT 256 can be found way cheaper!

If you're really, really desperate a 7900GS would merely OK now, but when Quake Wars and Crysis and the new games that come out, you're going to be stuck in the same bind and wish you hadnt spent $300 a few months before.

I would personally put that $300 to a new system upgrade. You'll be happier in the long run. Besides, if money is so tight, dont compound the problem by keeping yourself in the AGP hole.
