is there noticeable difference between P2 400 and Celeron @ 850?

Celerons are very similar to P2's in most situations I think, so an 850 MHZ Celeron should be much faster than a P2 400.

 
Celeron 850s perform at about the same level as a P3 600-700 in most cases. I don't know about video playback though. I believe Tom's Hardware have several articles on video playback, so perhaps you'd like to take a look.
 
I wouldn't say MUCH faster, but yes, you will notice a difference. Have you considered a Duron? A Duron @ 1GHz shouldn't cost you much more and Durons are better performance clock for clock than a celery
 
Didn't want to upgrade the motherboard, plus I think I might give this chip to my parents later on and get a better P3.
 
Bad comparison. A celeron 1 is based on p2, while a celeron 2 is based on p3. The celeron 2 at 850 is far faster then a p2 400, p3's are faster anyways.. and the extra instructions help too.

Minor correction. Celeron2 chips are based on the .18u Coppermine P3. Remember that the P3 was also available as a .25u Katmai part not so long ago......
 
I had a celeron 300a @ 450mhz until it died out so I switched to a Celeron 566 @ 850mhz and i have noticed some difference, but only in games. I noticied about a 20-30fps increase in Q3 and also an average increase of 15-20 fps increase in Counter-strike.
 
How would you put that in perspective... umm &quot;The Celeron 850 will eat a P2 400 for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus have room for dessert&quot;
 
Well there is another place where u can see a big difference in performance. A p2 400 can't decode divX at full quality, a celly 850 does it easily.

Zucchini: I know your correct on the DivX issue, but my Dual Celeron 464 under Win2K Pro does it just fine. Just thought I'd mention that for all the BP6 owners.
 
The Celeron2 at 850 should seriously smoke the P2 400. My new celeron 600 @ 900 even smokes my PIII 600E at 744!! about 15% faster in Wintune with identical motherboards:Q So a Celeron at 850 should totally run away from a PII 400. The Celerons are great bang for the buck without the complications of Duron/KT 133 hassles. Not as fast, but simpler for the simple ones among us. 🙂

OK, tell us about the &quot;Duron/KT 133 hassles&quot;. Do you own such a system? No? Aaahhhhh, you've heard it. Don't base your personal opinion only on things you've heard.... I've got a TBird with a MSI K7T Pro, and I never had problems, so.

Easy there, ndee 🙂. And a Duron is not neccesarily the best bang/buck upgrade for someone with a BX mobo (like me).

Ndee, I agonized for weeks over whether to go for the MSI-6330/Duron or the MSI-6309/Celeron. Believe it or not, I researched it at length. I just decided to sacrifice a little speed for the familiarity of the motherboard and the ease of overclocking without connecting bridges with a pencil. I am very happy with the decision I made, and I am pleased that you are happy with yours as well. I still may go for a MSI-KT7Pro with a Duron or T-Bird to upgrade the &quot;slow system&quot; in our house, a Celeron 366. Time and budget will tell. On the other hand, I also know that a Celeron 600@900 or 633@950 is also a very functional system and cost effective, too. Maybe the number of posts I have read of people having difficulties with their Duron/T-Bird systems are more a result of so many people putting them together rather than an indication of problems with the motherboards/processors. ( or maybe it is that so many of them were using the Abit motherboards 😉 )

wow, this is the EXACT same dillemma I have. Right now my p2 400 is running on some generic 440bx p2 motherboard with markings &quot;QMBX851C1000-000 Rev 1.0&quot; anyone know what motherboard this is? I was wondering if I could upgrade to a celeron II with a slotket and run it on this motherboard or do i have to buy a new motherboard? thx

UPDATE: I just figured out it is a EDOM motherboard

I don't say the celery is slow, cuz I never saw one running, but I do know that the Duron 600 at work, outpeforms my other computer, a PIII 500. I knooooooooooow, it's not only depending on the MHz fsck, but in my opinion, the quality of the components are equally. Actually, it doesn't matter to me with which CPU you go... 😀

Keeping in mind that Anand was running the Celeron II 766 at default front side bus, 66 MHz. I am very confident that a Celeron II 600 or 633 overclocked with the 100 MHz fsb would pummel the 766 in benchmarks. I was quite surprised that my Celeron 600 @ 900 was quite a bit faster than my PIII 600@744 in Wintune. I would be curious to see what a Duron 700 would do on wintune. Anybody?
