Is there much of a difference?

I am looking at purchasing a new video card to game with. I have looked at these two and both fit in my price range of under $160. The GTX is about $40-60 more than the GT, so I was wondering how much of an improvement I would see with the extra 16 shaders the GTX offers? Is it worth the extra cash?

Resolution = 1680x1050
Games = L4D, CSS, BF2142, Oblivion

I do plan on updating my processor as well to a new Phenom II when they come out in Jan/Feb.

I'd prolly get a 9800gt for those games and that resolution. The 9800gt will mudstomp those game with 100fps most of the time. There's a $105 EVGA dualslot cooler. Maybe you could find something even cheaper tomorrow, on cyber monday ?

There isn't a huge difference. These days, a 9800GTX isn't a great buy, considering that it seems to be more expensive than the 4850, which is generally faster. You may also be able to get a GTX260/4870 for not much more than 160 after live cashback, either of which would smoke a 4850 or 9800GT[X].

For the smoothest gameplay in Source games like L4D, CSS, TF2, DoD it's best to have a strong CPU. But even with your X2 you should be able to have moderate to high AA/AF at 1680x1050. My 9600GT is able to handle those games no problem and I would imagine a 9800 card would be even better. I don't know about Oblivion but at least with BF2142 you should also have no problem with moderate to high AA/AF.

Ok, thanks a lot for the advice. I might just go for the 9800GT as it is cheaper and if I need more performance just pop another one in SLI later on when they are cheaper.

If you're considering the 9800 GT, don't forget about the 4830, as its equally fast and is better once AA is enabled. Nice features such as HDMI audio out also.

Are the HD4830s as hot as their older brothers, the 4850/4870? I would rather have a card that doesnt run very hot with stock cooling.

9800 GT or HD 4830. Anything more will be overkill with your CPU (and even those two will bottleneck a bit). I see you're planning to upgrade when you can, so that's a little less of a concern (and its good you have it oc'd to about X2 5000 levels though - that'll help).

9800GTX+ for $144 AR (faster than 9800gt, and 9800gtx)

I usually only go for XFX, EVGA, or BFG for their warranties, otherwise that would be a good deal. Maybe I will check to see if there are any GTX+ from the three I listed that are the same price.

I'd go with a 9800GT since your motherboard supports SLI. You can always pop another one in there in the future.

And i second the EVGA dual slot cooling 9800GT, a very nice card!
