Usually onboard sound is ok but if you're doing games or higher soundwork, the Audigy 2 zs makes it necessary. It depends where you want to spend your $. Some of us don't have the riches so we will stick with the necessary hardware before spending on frills.
PSU, CPU, RAM, Video Card, Mobo and case; not necessarily in that order but you get the point. With the better sound comes the speakers and that could cost some bucks. After the software, then the frills. You can go out and really spend on the upper range stuff, but what do I know, you could be rich.....
 
Pick a piece of music or a game or whatever you will listen too most.
Listen with oneboard sound.
Listen with Audigy.
Pick which sounds best.

Compare with your ears.
