I am too lazy/busy to look this up, so I come to ATOT.

After reading the post about Phantom in HD I would like to know if LOTR was recorded in HD and will at some time in the future be released on Blueray/HD-DVD.

Are all movies recorded in HD?

Most movies, LOTR included, are still shot on 35mm film.

I'm sure it will be scaned to HD resolution when the DVD technology matures.

if there is $ to be made you can bet it will be released on blu-ray/hd-dvd, you can pretty much bank that the LOTRs will be some of the first to come out.

I've seen LOTR, TTT, and ROTK all in HD some time ago...all in the comfort of my living room too. Looked awesome...I'm sure they will be one of the key selling points when Blue Ray/HD-DVD comes out.

Probably on HBO-HD, Showtime-HD, or one of the other premium HD channels.

They were on one of the premium HD channels a few months back (I think Starz-HD or Showtime HD)...

When DirecTV had it on HD PPV a long time ago. Something like $4 a movie. I just wanted to see what it would look like in HD...ended up paying for all 3 movies. :)

Geeks love HD
Geeks love LOTR
Geeks willingly shelling out $30 per episode of unedited crap so they can watch a long, boring movie
Movie Companies love to make money
The conclusion is that LOTR and the rest of the triology are going to be available in HD on disc, HD-DVD or Blue Ray.

If I'm not mistaken, there was a high definition copy of the first in the series floating around on file sharing software (albiet slowly) that was recorded from a high definition broadcast of the movie. I know it was in 1080i resolution, but I don't know if it was from a 1080i source, or if it was a standard 720x480 DVD resolution upconverted to 1080i.

It was (and is) full blow 1080i high def. The extended editions no less. But these downloads are NOT for the faint of heart (30gb I think), and you need a monster of a machine to play it properly.

Really? I wouldn't think a 100 mb/s video would be that strenuous. Being that it's not heavily compressed like a WMVHD or DivX or H.264 video, I can't imagine it using THAT much CPU time.

I have all three LOTR (FOTR/TT/ROTK) in my HDD, 1080i, 5.1 DD. Captured the transport stream from my Motorola DCT6412 via firewire to my PC. ROTK is about 22 gb and works perfectly on a Athlon XP 2700 with a PNY GF4 Ti4200 @ 1600X1200 using PowerDVD.
Hopefully Blue-ray or HD-D will become affordable (hardware & media) so I can backup my HD collection. ;)
