Is there ever a good reason to quit a job...

Before finding a new one? I can't stand going to my job anymore. I have a college degree, around 7k saved up, and live rent free with the parents at the moment. My bills total ~$550 a month. The job hunt is taking a lot longer than anticipated, so it could be risky if it takes months to find something. I really do feel my current job is also impeding my current search as well. Has anyone here ever done this?

Can you cut back at your current job or change your hours. I wouldn't quit until you had something for sure.

Well if you have $7k saved up and bills of only $550 a month, you can survive at least half a year. Go for it. Without a job, you'll also have more time to look and go to interviews and such.

And more time to neff on AT

Seriously though, if that's how you feel, i'd just quit.
Your current financial situation is nice, so you can afford to not work for a while.

i had the same problem as you... i was working in nor cal and i wanted to find another job in so cal... so i cant just take half day off for an interview. it was tough. so what i did was i used up all my remaining 9 vacation days at the end of 2005 to schedule a bunch of interviews and hope that i would luck out...

otherwise i probably would have quitted shortly after that

so yeah, i'd quit and a full time job hunter.

IMO there are a near infinite number of good reasons. A job is only what you want it to be, nothing more.

I'm not saying it won't hurt your future employment prospects; only that as far as I'm concerned jobs are about the least important thing in the world. As long as you accept the consequences of your action (and it doesn't directly infringe on the rights of another), you can do pretty much anything you want - IT'S YOUR LIFE!

i did so, i felt that i wasnt learning much and there was too much drama coming from the higher ups. I never felt like I was wanted when the firm was bought out, so I just left and continued with my studies. I was unemployed for 7 months living with the parents and luckily landed a job through a friend.

It's OK to quit if...

1. You have another job lined up
2. You have enough in savings to cover expenses indefinitely... (That's a long time - think reitrement)
3. You are absolutely sure you can win and collect on the sexual harrassment lawsuit before your savings run out. 😀

I wouldn't quit if I didn't have another job lined up... income is income, no matter how you get it

Maybe consider a part time service job to tide you over until you find a job you like. That way you could streach your savings and still have time to look for the job you want.

I don't recommend walking away from money unless you just have to. Stick it out and keep applying. If you have large gaps in your resume, it may cause interviewers to ask questions.

But I'd probably stick with it for the money. Keep saving up and see if you can gather a downpayment on a house.
