Is there equal future for Slot 1 and FCPGA CPUs ?

If buying new, and if one has a slot 1 MB, should one buy an FCPGA cpu and use the adapter to fit into a slot 1 MB - or just buy the slot 1 CPU if there is equal "future" to the two approaches.

Is there any impression that slot1 is an older technology and being phased out ? Or is it as likely to continue as a technology as the newer FCPGA approach ?

Thanks

Ken

I think you'll have a greater choice of motherboards going with the FC-PGA over the Slot1.
With a Socket adapter, you can choose any board.
The early review on the DDR Intel supported board, shows possible life support. ;)

I read on one major manufacturers website that they will make no more slot 1 boards..that may tell you something, but there are other considerations like the Ram types coming out as well.

Thanks, Kowan and mastertech01, that is enough indicator for me to only buy an FCPGA

Kowan, you reference "The early review on the DDR Intel supported board, shows possible life support." I don't quite understand. Can you refer me to the URL of the DDR Intel supported board ?

mastertech01, in your mention of "but there are other considerations like the Ram types coming out as well." I am not aware of how ram types would relate to CPU's, could you elaborate a touch ?

Thanks,

Ken

VIA Apollo Pro: The P3 gets DDR
Intel's been working with VIA on DDR support for awhile now. We should be seeing more choices as time passes.

P.S. I think mastertech01 is referring to PC2600 as an example. The newer memory, normally requires a new board with supported DIMM slots.

I would defintely put my vote down for the FC-PGA being the "wave of the future" for the chip manufacturers. It is cheaper to produce which equates into higher profit margins. In addition you can definitely watch the slot one market wane as more and more board manufacturers are moving towards socket support.

Just my two cents

Their is no future for either Slot 1 or FCPGA. The P3 core is maxed out now at 1Ghz with no forcast for anything faster. That leaves DDR as the only potentional upgrade for the future. Unfortunatly, the P3 core will not benifit much from DDR according to Anandtech's review.

I agree it didn't help much, but it's a new board and with a BIOS update, it should get better.
Just wait, I bet they release a Apollo Pro 266A. ;)
