Is there anyway to slow down the Earth's rotation?

So that a day is 32 hours instead of 24? This would be good for me because it's 1:41 am now and I need to get up in the morning to go to work. I'm only gonna get 5 hours of sleep again. I'm always sleepy at work. I don't know why I can't force myself to go to bed earlier. I'm ruining myself with lack of sleep.

Anyways, with 32 hours/day, I can get an additional 4 hours of sleep and have an additional 4 hours to do fun stuff. With only 24 hours/day, I basically sleep, get up and go to work, come home and eat dinner, play with computer and repeat.

So let's get this straight, you want to alter the rotation of the entire planet, throwing most of the world into organizational chaos for 4 hours of sleep? Where do I sign up?

I'm don't know what planet you are from, but I'm pretty sure most employers would expect you to work at leat 6 of those 8 :disgust:

get a giant spacecraft (understand it has to be HUGE) and use a line to pull on the side to slow the spin. easy as that :)

Let's just make a day 48 hrs and break each day into 4 parts instead of two.

AM(1), AM(2), PM(1), PM(2)

Better yet, let's run a big cable all the way to the moon...the cable can be attached to to moon and then attached to a big generator on earth...the moon orbiting around the earth will turn the generator and we'll have all the electricity we'll even need!!!

Someone go start a petition. :)

I think if all 6 billion people on earth were to stop what they're doing on Dec. 20th @ 10AM PST (GMT -08:00) and do a run-athon towards the east. All 6 billion pairs (even babies and elders can help!) of running legs will soon decrease the rotation speed of Earth and we can have 32, 48, or even 60 hrs in a day!

Heh I just saw that part last night on Sci-Fi. That's probably the best part of all the Superman movies.

You forget that when the people slow down and stop, their momentum will then cancel out what they just did.

Yeah, until the moon loses energy and plummets towards the earth... :)

Not to mention that the slowing of the earth's rotation would most likely result in the partial collapse of the earth's crust.

The earth is losing something like 500uS per year of rotational time. So the short answer to your question is, that it is already happening.

Slowing down the rotation of Earth would be a bad idea. I suggest widening its orbit. Get some really, really powerful spaceships, wrap some cables around Earth, and pull it a few hundred thousand kilometers away from the sun. Not only would we have a longer day, we'd be countering global warming. :)

We could install massive rockets on Earth. We'd just have to make sure that they are firmly attached to the ground. And then we just ignite them. Hmmmm....

Yeah, but we wouldn't have any summer! I'd say that we should bring Earth closer to the sun. And when the temperature rises, no-one would notice the global-warming anymore :D
