Is there anyway to know when video card and CPU prices drop.

So I was wondering if there's anyway to know when vid. card or CPU prices are going to drop. Does it always coencide with new releases. Anyone know when 6800gt's or Athlon 64's are likely to drop again. thanks

Athlon 64 prices (at least the 3200+ and 3500+ Winchesters) have gone UP in the last 3-4 days. Monarch went from $251 to $285 to $297 on the 3500+. ZipZoomFly just today raised the price of the retail 3200+ from $203 to $213. So... I wouldn't expect a drop overnight, but perhaps they'll drop again in a couple weeks.

As for 6800 prices, there is a thread dedicated specifically to that in the Video section of these forums. Just check there, cause people are watching those prices 24/7 and updating the list.

Yes, whenever I buy one of the above, wait 2 weeks, and it will drop in price. After all these years I seem to allways be off by at least 2 weeks.

Usually you'll see news on this and other hardware sites when major price cuts are rumored to be in the works (at least for CPUs; video cards generally just go down in price with time and changes in supply/demand). It makes sense for them to coincide with new releases, but sometimes prices will actually stay the same or go up (the 9800XT remained at a relatively high pricepoint even after the 6800GT was released, and when AMD cut prices on A64s a while ago, prices on the upper-end AXPs actually rose a bit).

well prifes on AXPs rose a little because there will be daisy joe with a 2200+ or a 1700+ or a 2400+ wanting not to upgrade anything in his machine and he wants to slap in a 3200+ or a 3000+~ essentially whatever he can take. That drives prices up. I remember a few years back prices on ~800mhz-1Ghz P3s cost more than P4s themselves because many companies with dual mobos needed more preformance without going on a new setup and tossing in another P3 at an extra cost was justifiable.
