Is there anyway to disable a laptop lcd and use a external monitor?

my compaq (yes I know) laptop has a 800x600 lcd screen, and when I connect an external monitor to it the max the monitor can do is 800x600, because the lcd screen stays active as well.

is there anyway to make the lcd screen shut off so I can use a higher res on the external monitor?

the laptop is currently running mandrake 7.2, but I am planning on putting some version of Windows on there as well.

Is there an option in the bios for:
simultanious
lcd
external
?
I'm supposed to setup a compaq laptop, but I'm working on a dell precision 330 and a toshiba 440cdt laptop right now.

no, the bios is pretty limited in what I can do.

basically I can change the drives boot order, and stuff like suspend, etc...
thats about it.

its just annoying to have a 17 inch monitor connected to this thing and the best I can do is 800x600

I don't suppose Mandrake has a simular tool to windows that lets you select the primary and secondary display, does it?

not sure either, kind of a linux newbie 🙂

anyway when the machine was running 98 and ME it wouldn't allow me to select the primary and secondary display either. not sure if 2000 will let me or not, never tryed it before.

most laptops (ie all the ones I have seen) have a key combination for switch monitors. Generally that consist of the 'Fn' (often blue in color) key and one function keys at the top of the keyboard.

THANKS bevancoleman!
I can't believe I overlooked that.
Fn plus F3 allows me to change from the lcd, to external, to simultaneous display.

I had always looked at that key wondering what it was for, then I actually pressed it and pow it works.

Thanks again
