The pricks at my local theater won't let people buy tickets for people under 17 unless the purchaser looks 25+. So we can't buy tickets for my friend's brother who is a sophomore. It's the theater's loss really, because we'll just get someone we know who works there to let us in for free.

The theater I go to won't let anyone under 17 into an R movie period. Not if someone else buys the ticket, not if they're accompanied by an adult, not if they're with their parents, not if they're a week old baby sound asleep in mommy's arms.

When I was ~12, which was early '90s, my friends and I never had a problem getting tickets for R rated movies on our own. This was in Marina Del Rey, CA.
