Is there anything wrong with AMD?

I suggested to my friend to order a Barton 2500+ but he said AMD's run too hot and are unstable. His proof was that he has a 1800+ and he said it's always too hot (sometimes to the point of crashing).

I have never heard of such issues with AMD, or 1800+'s in particular. Does anyone have links to prove/disprove his statement?

(me running a 2500+ with only 1 of 2 case fans on and stock heatsink/fan...no problems here)

Unless your friends last CPU was a 1.4 thunderbird and he had no case ventilation, tell him to get with the times :p Those days are over.

No. Your friend probably didn't install and cool it properly. Perhaps he forgot the thermal compound between the CPU and HSF.

For someone like that, a Dell will certainly be more reliable since someone else built it, or if they insist on building it themselve a retail P4 is more (ahem) idiot-proof.

2) He may not have proper case ventilation
3) He may not have good monitoring software
4) His instability could be bad memory, PSU, software, etc....
5) He may be a moron.

No, my Athlon64 runs cooler than a 3.0c P4, so NO there is nothing wrong with AMD, and it hasn't crashed in months.

the 1800+ axps were pretty hot with stock cooling, but not to point that they're unstable unless he has poor cooling or forgot the thermal paste.

modern AMDs actually run cooler than P4s, at least in the top end of things. in the case of the AMD 64s vs P4EE, the P4s are MUCH warmer.

That's exactly what I thought guys, thanks very much. I will tell him that some of those chips ran hot but to not worry.

Also, I believe his 1800+ computer was pre-built so I doubt he did anything wrong as far as the cooling goes.


More comments are certainly welcome, thanks!

Theres nothing wrong with AMD processors.

My mobile Barton 2500+ is running at 2.3ghz with 1.75V pumped through it.... granted Im using a Thermalright SLK900A (big heatsink) and a 92mm Panaflo L1A (big, slow fan)... I get load temps of under 53 degrees.

Intel are running into some heat issues with their Prescotts and the higher end Northwoods probably pump out quite a bit of heat too but an Intelomaniac should be able to give better advice on Intels heat situation.

How the heck is a processor so hot it's 'to the point of crashing'? If it crashes then it crashes.

If he got it prebuilt, stability problems probably stem from a crappy mobo, PSU, and/or ram. I don't even think case cooling would be a factor, a PSU fan and an undervolted 80mm exhaust should have no problems cooling a 1800+ palomino with the stock HSF.

I have 8 of them right now, and have built hundreds. The only bad chipsets I had were the ALI ones. VIA is fine, and nforce is OK. SIS is what I am typing on right now (ECS K7S5A, old version 1, my most stable computer !)

The 1100 will run hotter than the 1800's. It si a generation or two before that one. For the most part, each generation is cooler (not exactly, I know)

These days Intel chips run hotten than AMDs. And stability really isn't an issue anymore. Both are rock solid.

The only thing wrong with AMD is a distinct lack of mass marketing. Unfortunately it's hard to blame them for that (tight profit margins at best...) :(
