Actually, doesn't it depend on what you eat and what you've been doing before sleep?
I've read in a few places that agree that if you just eat and sleep you'll just add to fat since your body enters an anabolic state but then finds nothing to do... so it makes fat. If you eat protein and light carbs before bed, the idea in the context of fitness is to aid in recovery from a workout. It works fer me... I feel and see the results myself.
Here's a quote a ripped from a WannaBeBig.com article..."Experts at the University of Texas Medical branch in Galveston note that what you eat up to two days after a training session can actually determine the success of that workout. These experts state that the response of protein muscle metabolism to a bout of resistance training can last upwards of 24-48 hours. This means that any meal you eat in this time period will have a influence on muscle hypertrophy. "
So it kinda depends on the context... are you working out regularly and require an insane amount of calories for the goals you've set? Or are you just a lazy bum

Currently, I'm supposed to be gobbling down 3500-4000 calories a day... frankly I have trouble eating that much.
