Is there anything worse than a greedy consumeristic slob paying lip service to the environment?

So I'm watching House Hunters or something (I didn't choose the channel) and this couple is showing the kitchen renovation they did. Massive house, massive kitchen. Their heating and AC bill, it goes without saying, is quite substantial. They were happy as a pig in sh*t, however, to point out their bamboo cabinets and how it's a "renewable" resource. I bet they can feel happy now that they've "done their part" despite otherwise being power-hungry profligate consumer-whores.

Yes, this is in the same vein as driving a Prius to the private hanger where your jet is. Or having a 15 gallon rain catching jug next to the tap that powers your sprinkler you run twice/week chugging through hundreds of gallons a month.

Perspective failure.

People like to feel good about what they do, even if it's wrong and hypocritical. Self righteousness and hypocrisy are nothing new.

It's worse than the Prius to the hanger jet because there is a 99.9% chance that they removed and threw away existing cabinets in order to put in the bamboo. Tearing out and throwing away cabinets to put in cabinets from renewable bamboo does not help the environment, it hurts it. HGTV green episodes of House Hunters almost always fail to mention this.

Isn't that like saying "Human trafficking is bad" then using illegal immigrant labor?

I soak my feet in acid when I get home every night, so it removes all of the carbon from my footprints. Hurts like a bitch, but from my understanding I am more environmentally-friendly by doing this.

Perspective failure = you. Would you rather them not try at all? Sure, they're not your model ecofriendly perfect little hippies, but isn't it better to have some effort than no effort at all? Does the collective half-assed attempts equal something? Or is it all just a waste in your eyes? Something to think about...

The one I bolded. Like an obese person going for a 10 minute bike ride and rewarding themselves with a bag of chips.

Errr... most cabinets are made out of wood, which is also a renewable resource.

Who knows, maybe when they did the renovation they went with all high efficiency stuff.

Our new house is probably what would be considered a McMansion, 2 heating/cooling systems, 2 tankless hot water heaters, etc.... but when we built it I went with high efficiency stuff and our highest gas bill this past winter was $146 and some change. That's with keeping the house at 72 and with my wife using the gas log fireplace in the master bedroom every night. So far this spring/summer, and we've had temps in the upper 90's and over 100, our highest electric bill has been $103.

I would imagine that most pine cabinets are made from pine obtained from non-sustainable mills. But they do certainly exist. It doesn't really matter what wood they used, though. The act of tearing out perfectly good cabinets to replace them with sustainable / rapdily renewable wood "for the environment" is completely ridiculous.

Not the same thing. They aren't installing an additional set of non-eco friendly cabinets somewhere else in the house in addition to the good ones they put in. They are doing a single good thing, but not doing anything additionally bad for that specific product that is a negative. So there is no additional offset, they are only lowering their overall use of bad product.

I know, but they grow slower than bamboo so bamboo is the trendy wood to use :)

What do you pay per kilowatt hour? That seems crazy cheap.

And they feel good enough about it to mention it, plus the appraising realtor was saying how her clients will appreciate it. It reminded me of a rich king who thinks he's magnanimous because he threw a basket of semi-rotten apples out of his carriage and the sorry peasantry ate it up, his good deed for the day done.
