Is there anything my friend can do about this?

I have a friend who has had a lot of harsh, untrue things said about her on a person's myspace blog. The blog is set to private so i don't think anything can really be done legally, since you can't go into google and type her name or anything to find it, but I thought I'd ask anyways.

Short of beating the ever-living crap out of the person for saying these things, is there really anything she could do about this? I told her most likely not, but that I'd post on here to get other people's opinions. Its basically college-aged students acting like high schoolers, but what was said really upset her.

Thanks for the help.

myspace blog. The two words she needs to take note of.
They mean no one in general gives a crap about what is written there.
Tell her to ignore the person and be done with it.

Gain access to offender's computer (or pay someone close to offender to do it)
Install keylogger / pw capture software
Get login info
Login
Change offender's password
Delete comments
Insert interesting "updates" on person's life. Be creative.

Examples: I'm finally coming out of the closet! My ongoing affair with my boss! What really happened that night with the Smirnoff and the neighbor's dog! My first college gang bang! etc.

A while back I had an employee posting libelous material on her xanga. A quick professional email to the blog's web admin should straighten things out.

Internet blog posts are no different than any other media when it comes to defamation law. You're friend could certainly sue.

Even with it set to private? I figured since average joe citizen couldnt find what was written unless they had permission from the author, it wouldn't count. Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think there is much considered private on the internet. Sounds like your friend knows what the content is, and I doubt myspace is secure.

Agreed - why do people take this stuff seriously?
