Is there anything more dispicable that playing politics with childrens' safety?

They should cut drivers and have the remaining ones drive longer routes that start earlier.

Yeah, there was any number of options but they want to mete out punishment at the childrens' expense to make a political point. Bastards.

There are a lot of streets without sidewalks and many sidewalks aren't plowed during winter, which is a real issue as we typically get over 100 inches of snow.

It's not an issue of distance or of kids being lazy.

It's an issue of safey, particularly for small children.

I've never lived anywhere that provided door to door transportation for k-2.. both my kids went to half-day kindergarten, and the first one, we lived walking distance to the school (in their opinion!) so they provided transportation the mid-day direction. not to the door, but.. we lived in a townhouse then.. 2 days a week I drove my daughter to a friends house to get on the bus (because my son needed to be picked up at preschool at the same time she needed to be at our bus stop.. she was in PM kindergarten) and they did stop in front of her house, so.. maybe it was the nature of my neighborhood.. still, was only one direction.

my son went to kindergarten here, and they did bring him to the door after school (he was in AM kindergarten) but he had to go to the bus stop with the rest of the kids to get there. round here, if you live less than 1.5 miles from the school, you walk, unless there's a not full to capacity bus that happens to go by you.. whatever grade you're in, unless you're in half day kindergarten, then you do get picked up or brought home, regardless. we probably don't live 300 yards from the elementary school as the crow flies, but it is just over 1.5 miles by road.

anyway.. if the taxpayers aren't willing to fund the budget, then they have to cut costs somewhere, and.. as a parent, I'd way prefer them to cut transportation funds than cut teachers or technology or elective classes..

door to door transportation for k-2 is a luxury.

How would that save any money?

Not to mention how would they fit more kids on probably already crowded busses?
