Is there anything more boring than Indycar racing?

I actually watched most of the Mid Ohio race last Sunday and holy crap... what a boring race. I was watching the Olympics and during a commercial I saw that Mid Ohio was just starting so I tuned in for the pre-race and watched that and the first 10 or so laps and kept it on while doing other things but it was just a complete snooze-fest.

Thoughts?

It's a far cry from how the series was during the mid 90's before some genius thought it was a good idea to split the series.

1995 Cleveland

I haven't seen any other race this year other than Long Beach but the cars just arent doing it for me. F1 cars are ugly too but the racing has been pretty good.

They should add mario kart style gadgets on the car. Would be much more exciting

That track is way cool... a race isn't over if a driver cooks a corner, just drive back on a few places back!

F1 isn't any more exciting. At least with Indycar the winner isn't predetermined by Bernie Ecclestone :p

Those drifting competitions. Looks cool at first but gets old real quick. Can't believe it's still around.

CART was unquestionably better than the current IRL. Though I'm glad to see IRL moving away from the oval-only format that they started with. I don't like that it's basically spec racing though. CART was fun, technology changed and team dominance shifted and there just seemed much more of a drive to improve the machines. I still remember when the "pushrod" Ilmor engines came on the scene and just demolished everyone.

And, of course, there's always The Pass. :)

Spec racing is ok. Anytime costs spiral out of control it simply cannot sustain itself for long. So far the only exception is F1. But even they are trying to "control costs".

Spec racing is OK for the teams. Not as much for the fans. Even NASCAR was better back when they had to base the cars on "production" models.

This is probably why I like ALMS so much. The GT class has to be based on actual cars and even the prototypes have variation.

I still remember the old one-offs at Indy and loving the thrill of the ridiculously fast but always fragile V6 Menard cars. Racing is just better when there's variation and actual competition in development of the machinery and there's ways to limit costs without making everyone race identical cars. This isn't an IROC series after all.

At one point, a top-secret goodwill meeting took place between George and Penske, who invited NASCAR Chairman Bill France Jr. to sit in. France listened to both sides, recognized the impasse, and offered a simple conclusion.
"He has the biggest race," France said as he pointed to George and then shifted his gaze to Penske, "and you're going to lose."

agreed that indycar needs variation. although, the variation within F1 led that series to being about the most boring thing on the planet for over a decade.

I was going to say Nascar, but at least they crash alot so it's not as boring.

Least boring I'd have to say is the Aussie V8 Supercar series. Those guys are insane.

Indy and nascar are great in person/spectator sports.

On TV, they can be good at times, but I don't watch it.

HOWEVER, I would rather go to Indy/nascar race than Formula 1. Now there is a POOR in person/spectator sport (but pretty good on TV).

Although I don't watch F1 either due to all the BS politics. 80s/early 90s were the prime for F1....now it's meh

I'm pretty sure that NASCAR is only entertaining if you watch it with a large group of drunken rednecks. It actually sounds awesome then.

Lemons is fantastic to watch (and drive in). The leading cars are either fast, or handle well, but rarely both, so you'll see FWD and rear-engine cars dive-bomb on the inside line with late braking, powerful cars try to power out on the outside line in a turn, giving you two cars wide in most turns. If there's some poor schmuck caught in the middle you'll get 3-cars-wide in some turns!

Then there's dodging the really slow cars and cautious drivers and trying not to get hit by the really fast cars with butt-hole drivers. Avoiding debris on the track because most cars are falling apart...

Because so many drivers are used on each team you can go out and get passed by one car a bunch of times, they switch drivers, then you pass them a bunch. It's wild.
