Is there anything like ERD Commander for Vista?

SO my box is fubar'd.. windows has crashed and it won't start in regular or safe mode. I do need the files off the box, with XP and previous versions if this ever happened I would use Winternals ERD Commander 2005, well it doesn't work with vista. I need some kind of tool that will allow me to get my files and either burn them to a CD or transfer it over the network.

Is there such a thing?

I can't believe Winternals sold their company to Microsoft, otherwise I'm sure they'd have a 2007 version out that would work for me.

Easiest would be if I could transfer the files over the network.. any Ideas? Thanks

Did you try doing a repair using the Vista DVD? It will do a system restore if necessary, and it's actually very good at determining root cause of the problem and fixing it.

Can I use a Linux LiveCD like Knoppix to access my files? or will that not work because they are taken ownership by the account in windows?

That should work as long as there's an NTFS driver. You could also mount the drive in another Vista or XP box.

Oh almost forgot...the Vista DVD is a full PE environment. On the repair menu there is an option for a command prompt. So you should be able to hook up an external USB drive and copy files that way.

In case you haven't found it, getting to the command prompt is a little tricky. When you click repair, it will bring up a box with a list of Vista installs and ask which one you want to repair. Don't select anything, and then close that box. You should then get the repair menu with the command prompt option.
