Is there anything I can use to quiet my harddrive?

QuietDrive only supports 5400rpm drives. I had a Western Digital 7200rpm drive in one last year..and it died after three months.

For a quiet hard drive (no whine at all) without losing total performance...the Seagate Barracuda IV is a good bet.

I had thought about buying something like silentdrive, but after some testing I realized that my hard drive wasnt making all the noise, it was my cpu fan.

^ excellent point. Make sure to find out where the noise comes from. I already have a super-quiet Panaflo on my CPU (it's only a P3 866), and my Radeon fan is reasonably quiet. My PS needs a Panaflo L1A fan in it, so it'll get modded after the fan arrives. My harddrives, though, are getting really annoying. Both of my drives will be 5400's (I'm trying to trade an IBM 7200 for a 5400 drive so I can have both in the silentdrive enclosure).

Wheee... wish I had more $ to spend on making my computer silent, though. It can get damn expensive!

Whoa, neat site. Has anyone tried the quiet power supply units though? On my machine, the power supply makes as much noise as the CPU fan if not more (since it is pretty much outside).

I really need something that will work too... my WD800BB hard drive is louder than hell... at idle it emits a high frequency whine that drives me nuts.

The information on the molex site indicates that the enclosure is designed for drives that disappate up to 5 watts of heat... the WD specifications for this drive indicate total drive useage doesn't exceed 7.2 watts and some of that has to be going to actually RUN the drive, so it might be safe... not sure I want to gamble the drive to find out though.

The only reason I bought the stupid thing is because of the BB deal on it, I end up getting it after rebate and pricematch for $60.

a better option for those of us in the US would be to order the silentdrive enclosure from Directron

Directron

I went to order from quiet PC and the shipping to the US was $35!

WOW! They'd better ship it packed in money for that much.

I agree with KenAF and Acts837. I've actually decided to purchase a pair of Seagate Barracuda IV's. Every review I've read says they're the quietest drives you can get. Reviews here.

I wish I can hear my harddrive.
I know its pretty loud, but the amd cpu fan just drowns it out.
When I had my celeron, I would put the hardrive on top of one of those aol cd cases, and it quieted it down alot.

nawwww.... these new WD hard drives scream like banshees... there is a high frequency constant whine (probably in the 3,000 hertz range) that is extremely annoying... however, because of rebate deals I couldn't pass on the drive (paid $60 for it after rebates)... if I have to spend $40 on a super quiet drive enclosure then I will do that. The Seagate would have been $130 so I am still ahead.

Be sure it's a hdd problem- more likely the cpu fan, as has already been said. Shut down, hold the cpu fan to stop it from running, reboot. Then let it go, compare the before and after. Never try to stop a running fan. Do the same with all other fans. Remove the hdd power plug, boot from a floppy, see if the noise is gone, etc. Use a process of elimination to find the loudest source of noise, work on that first..... the most common offenders are cpu, vidcard and chipset fans.....

My 7200 rpm WD drives do emit a very faint high pitched whine, but you'll only hear it in a very quiet system.....

you know, not everyone here is as stupid as you seem to think. I run an ultra quiet CPU cooler. I put a new HDU in and immediately noticed the high pitched whine. If I yank the power cord from the hard disk the whine stops, immediately.... still sound like a f*cking cpu fan to you?

Does anyone have the link to the Japanese site with the aluminum version of the SilentDrive...that is supposed to offer somewhat better heat dissipation?

Or the link to the German site that offered thick steel/aluminum 5.25" bay enclosures for quieting hard drives? The German product was the best I had ever seen...perhaps worth importing if there were enough interested parties...but I lost the link.

Well, I didn't find any links to a Japanese version of the silentdrive enclosure... the stamp on the side says it's manufactured in the US, are you sure that the Japanese design it?

Anyway, I ordered one with a compunurse so that I can make sure it's not going to cook my 7200 RPM drive.

gunf1ghter, you can snag one of the Baracuda drives for $101 at newegg, which is much better than $130. But still, for you it seems the silentdrive is the best bet if your drive stays cool enough.

Wow, Gunf1ghter, didn't realize it was your thread now, unless you've hijacked it from davidos. Try taking it out on your dog, OK? Sheesh.....

Thanks for all the replies! I have already switched out the fan on my cpu to a 21db 80mm silent fan and have 2 16db 60mm fans at the back of the case for exhaust. My psu has a 27db fan on it but I just got a 22db fan to put in there if that is the culprit. My intake is a 22dba 80mm fan.

Bottom line is I don't think it's the fans so I'm going to try the unplugging the hard drives thing and booting from floppy.

Do CD-RW and CD drive make a whining noise when they idle?

Does the Seagate whine when it idles or is it just that it's quiet when it seeks?
