I don't have a Mac nor an Apple TV. My Vizio TV added support for AirPlay, which does work, but is pretty choppy. I send the signal over from my iPhone 8+ and the TV picks it up right away. However, you can't really watch sports this way since it pauses about every 3 or 4 seconds. The TV and iPhone are on the same wifi network, and the Access Point is very close. I can also Cast with Chromecast from the same phone, using the same stream, and the image is smooth on the TV (the TV came with Chromecast built in).

Pictures via AirPlay work just fine, I can send any of them to the TV, but video seems to be quite low bandwidth. As it works smoothly with Chromecast, I will continue to use that in the meantime, but all of my kids have iPhones so I thought it would be worthwhile figuring out why AirPlay is so choppy.

The TV lists AirPlay version 25.06 and Chromecast version 1.40.169511.

Thanks.

I'm sure I will, but I don't think I need one. The TV has most of the apps I use (Netflix, Prime, Disney, etc.), really the only one it is missing is SportsNet. The app supports casting, which works perfectly with the built-in casting (the non-Ultra version of casting). So I am not sure i'll gain much if I buy an Ultra, other than I can probably cast in 4K. The TV is already extremely clear in 1080p casting, I have watched sports in 4K before and didn't notice much of an improvement in picture quality. The image is undoubtedly a bit sharper, but not in a way which improves the sport.
