Is there any way to teach my cat to cover her own poo?

WHY?~!!?! I even have an automatic litter maid, but if she doesn't cover it, the whole house smells like cat sh!t - and she just sits on the couch looking pretty while she licks herself.

AArrg - is there any kind of food I can feed her to make it not smell so bad?

We just put a cat door into a small closet and put her cat food and litter box in there. Almost no smell at all in the house. I know that doesn't actually answer your question (to which I have no answer), but simply a possible alternative.

Yep both of mine are the same way. Me and the wife start gagging whenever they take a dump. God it stinks so freaking bad :/ And it's not like they're not trying to cover it. I can hear them scratching away at the litter for up to 2-3 minutes after they do their business.

Exactly!!! She scratches everywhere around it. Hell, she even scratches the floor AROUND the litter pan.

What kind of food are you using now?
None of my cats have ever had to be taught to cover it, they've always just done it.
Lastly, does the litter box have any sort of covering? Those help a lot.

Is it still covered by warranty? If not, do the environmentally conscious thing and take it to the recycler.

Ya, mine likes to scratch at the wall, not sure what the hell he is thinking. We have to cover the crap ourselves.

My cat does the same thing. She steps outside the litter box and stratches the floor. I guess she's trying to dig up the floor to cover the box. She also does the same thing after she eats too... for some reason she tries to cover her food dish.

Nah - it's one of those Automatic Litter Maids, that clean the box by itself. It's just that, it takes a few minutes to work after they drop a deuce.

She's eating Purina Cat Chow.

I have a question... do those automatic cat boxes actually work? I've thought about getting one of those before but was always worried they would just get all gunked up and I'd end up having to clean the box all the time so it would keep working.

my cat had that, but she had some bathroom issues, so we controlled her diet a bit, we gave her 3 times a day, a spoon of yogurt with ACTIVE cultures in it and switched to adult food (from high nutrient kitten food) and that problem went away in a few days.

You might try Iams. Can't say for sure or not if it will help, but it seemed to work out better for our cats.

I clean it about once a month, other than that, it works great 🙂

Some of the high end cat foods (Eukanuba, Royal Canin) have food for indoor cats that are supposed to produce less stinky poo. I don't know how well they work though.

Definitely get a covered litter box with a little plexiglass door. I've never smelled cat ****** outside of the closet the litter is in ... except for the time she deposited a dog-sized turd when locked in the back hall :|

I've seen my cat do his business outside before. He always successfully covers up his do do when going outside but not always when going inside. I have come to the following conclusion about this:

cat's covering up their poop is largely a instictive action. The cat doens't really think or analyse the process or effectiveness of his actions. A litter box is not really large enough for a cat to manuever in. Therefore, some cats will be poorly successful trying to cover up his litter in a litterbox and since they do not analayse the effectiveness of their performance, they will be ineffective at covering up their own litter.

Solution: get a bigger litter box.

lol the only issue that was solved by getting a bigger litter box was: Kept my cat from pooping outside the litter box and to keep him from scratching the floor. But other than that, he still wouldn't cover up his poop. 🙁
