is there any way to run "full screen" games in a window in xp?

i'm running windows xp at work.. and i'd like to play some games that are normally full screen in a window so I can still take calls and do my job.

the game in particular is carmageddon 1 (old, i know).

i've seen people play quake in a window, but i can't for the life of me figure out how to do this.

any ideas?

It normally does have to be built into the game, but there are some apps that will do it for you. If the game is DirectX, this might work: CobraCommander

There are others out there too, but i can't recall them atm.

alt+enter doesn't work, and the game uses directx 3 or something. i can't seem to get cobracommander to work.

thanks for the replies, any other ideas?

If you add -w to the shortcut it will run the game in a window. I do not know if the game has to specificly support this but I have seen this answer given more than once.
