I don't want to o/c the pci because I have very expensive components in my system. Quantum 10K SCSI 160, HP Scanner, Plextor 12x4x32 RW, Plextor CDrom 40X, Canon powershot S20, NEC 2l" monitor, etc.
As long as you use 66@ 100Bus or 100@ 133Bus. 66 /2 = 33Mhz
100 /3 = 33Mhz, 133 /4 = 33Mhz.
As long as you use those FSBs and correct dividers you're fine, otherwise you'll be a bit over or under.. i.e.
124/4 = Underclock @ 31
130/4 = Underclock @ 32.5
So certain speed using /4 you're underclocking and don't hurt the system.
But this could be done only with a board that supports the 1/2 divider, isn't it? I was looking at the BX Master (very fast and stable but no 1/2 divider) or the Asus new version of the P3V4X (16 FSB settings, unknown performance, slow memory problem, but with the 1/2 divider) Which one would be more suitable for me? Thanks
If your graphics card can take 133 * 2/3 = 89 MHz, then you can try the BX master or the Asus BE6 II. Then you will be oc'ing only the agp graphics card and the cpu, nothing else. If the graphics card can take the above speed, then a via apollo 133a or an i815e motherboard will be better. By the way, the Via apollo 133a mothermoards like the Asus P3V4X or the MSI 6309 can be tweaked, have a look here ... http://www.viahardware.com/memorytweak.htm
so that their memory throughput isn't too much lower than a BX board.
Also raising the pci speed a bit shouldn't produce any problems with your other devices. I haven't seen any devises fail or not function up to 37.5 pci apart probably from some Maxtor hard disks.
Thank you guys. So the PCI and AGP live in two different environments, PCI 33Mhz and AGP 66Mhz. Am I right? In the case of the Soyo 6BA+IV the PCI is automatically set between 30 ~ 41mhz, but is the AGP that cannot be set @ 1/2 divider huh? Which will o/c my AGP card to like 89mhz out of specs. This obligates me to go with the Abit VT6X4 since the Asus P3V4X doesn't have the 32 FSB choices anymore. Anyways the Abit is only 2 points below in performance than the Asus according to Tom's Hardware. Also the Abit VT6X4 has 2 ISA slots that I need for my sound card and modem, plus is cheaper than the ASUS ($98.00) Abit ($81.00). What do you think? I don't care about ATA100. I have SCSI 160, much better...
The Asus CUV4X has the 32 FSB choices and works nicely with the WPCredit tweaks. 373/433 with a 500e@667 and 256 megs of ram. It also has onboard audio which doesn't sound any different then the Creative Live Value I have so you wouldn't need 2 ISA slots.
