Is there any way to manually fix overscan on a RPTV?

I have a standard rear projection HD Samsung TV and it seems that lately it's been cutting off more and more on the sides and top and bottom of the screen.

For example, if I'm watching a show and they put text at the bottom of the screen, it cuts it off.

I was watching a movie yesterday on my Media Center also and there was a person on the left edge of the screen and half his face was cut off.

Is it possible to open up my TV and adjust something?

Are there professional menus that are hidden that would let me pull back the projected size to fit better?

This looks like the one I have.

How much overscan do you actually have and what kind of rptv is it?

But yeah, you can fix it in the service menus of most all TVs.

I updated the OP with a link to the one I have.

Also I'm using the term Overscan to mean that it's cutting off the borders of the image.

It's enough that I cannot read text at the bottom of the screen on a regular basis or if something is taking place on screen on the edges, I cannot see it.

I have my Media Center PC hooked up via DVI and the bottom is cut off so much that I can't see the task bar at all for example.

My Motorola HD DVR is hooked up via Component cables and is what I watch TV through, when watching shows on channels like Discovery HD where they'd list someones profession/title and name under, I can read the top part but not the bottom.

Looks like a CRT which is notorious for overscan. You can search avsforum for your model number to find the values you can adjust. But BE CAREFUL and make minor changes and record what the values were before. Adjusting overscan can really mess up your geometry and you'll have to redo your convergence. You can shoot for 5% all around and should be safe.

I found on avsforum how to get into the menu so I'll have to check it out when I get home but it sounds like from what other owners on there are saying, there's pretty much no hope of fixing it and it'll probably make things worse if I mess with it.

That is why I gave up on my HTPC with my 57" RP CRT, just couldn't get results I was happy with. Going through all the tweaks from the SM, and possibly doing no better and maybe worse, well, I just canned the project. The 360 and PS3 have worked out so well, I don't really miss it. :)

Depends on the set.
I have a hitachi 51" that has a pot for adjusting the overscan.
Can bring it all the way down by as much as 15%.

you can open it up and play with the rings. But before you do anything, grab a wax pencil and draw a line across the rings, that way you can come back to original settings. That's how we used to do it.

added link.

also, you should be able to adjust for overscan from your computer for the media center end of things.

I always ended up with a non-standard custom res. I could make the whole desktop fit on screen no problem, but it would be 11XX x 7XX that kind of thing. In the end, I just didn't care for it, I tweaked with powerstrip, tried customizing every setting for the res, I was just never very happy.
