Is there any way to make a glossy TV screen less shiny?

I can't imagine there being a good way to do it. Something like 100% alcohol might remove the coating, but the end result wouldn't be good. Realistically, turning off the lights is the only way to reduce the glossy effect. Or buying a TV without such a glossy finish.

Most TVs are going to be glossy. Keep in mind that in your home it's extremely unlikely that you have lights anywhere near the intensity of retail lighting.

You probably won't even notice it unless you have really poorly placed lights, & in that case you can just turn them off.

they are all glossy now. piss me off.

Same here. IMO the only real advantage of LCD over plasma is light control. When the slap a glossy coating on there, then the LCD advantages total a big, fat zero. I think the anti-reflective coating on my plasma handles light better than glossy LCD screens.
