Is there any way to keep java applets from locking up a browser?

This is happening to some extent on 3 systems that I know of; 1 win2k, 1-98 and 1 NT. The java applet in question is the stock market streamer at datek.com. It might run for a little while but will always lock the 2k system, every now and then it will lock the NT system and apparently locks the 98 systems if a game is played simultaneously. The lockup is so severe on the 2k/IE5.5 system I can't even use the Task Mgr to close the browser or shut down - I just have to hit the reset! Usually all applications are affected.

I don't think it's the browser 'cause both Netscape and IE are affected. Two of the systems are homebuilt and the other is a Dell PIII 500.

Any ideas?
