I use a cable modem without having cable television service. They usually charge $5-$10 extra.

Move to that small town in california were its all wired up with wifi.

But yeah, you can get cable internet (if the service is avalible to you), even if youd don't have cable tv, they'll charge you 5-10$ more a month.

Edit: Well its not wired up with wireless, lol, but you get the point.

A few of the local ISPs here do Wireless. They call it wireless DSL, but all it really is 802.11b with line of sight antenna on your roof. Works well, averge about 1-2 mbps download.

I have Starband 2-way satellite, its mid-band down, slow up, expensive $70/mo., and $200 -$400 install. If you live off-the-grid, few options.

Unwired is available in australia, there may be a similar service available where you live.

You can have cable modem without cable TV. The cable company will just come and install the cable connection and modem.

you cant get dsl without a physical phone line
you cant get cable without a physical cable
you can get broadband over power lines, or wireless broadband

I can't remember where I read it. Maybe MSN or something but it was broadband through power lines. Currently a small part of OH has it if i remember correctly.

So does Verizon, it's $35/month for 1.5/384 service vs. $30 if you have a landline.

Satellite, but I really don't recommend it...

Neither do I, my folks had that for a while I never liked it.
It was 500kbps down and up via the phone line. High latency, the request is sent via the phone line so its a delay like in 56k before it actually starts to send. Making it useless for gaming.

I've got 20mbps/7mbps right now through VDSL but im thinking of upgrading to 100mbps via fiber that one company is offring at cost of 110$ per month.

I feel kinda lucky with so much options and speeds to choose from, not everyone is so fortune =)

Before you go insulting someone, make sure you have your facts straight, or at least put up a valid argument.

Mday said you have to have a physical phone line to have DSL or cable service. He is correct on this. He then went on to say that one could get a wireless broadband connection. You insulted him and reitereated his point.

By definition, you have to have a physical phone line to have DSL service. DSL = Digital Subscriber *Line*. Cable service also implies a *cable* connection. Your coworker having a 300kb connection over his cell phone has nothing to do with DSL or cable. It is Wireless Broadband, just like Mday had already talked about.

You can usually get a cable modem\basic TV service for about $50 (Insight and Comcast do this, not sure about others), just don't hook up the TV and you've got broadband.

Homey,
You never mentioned whether Cable is an available option in your neighborhood. If they are, you do not have to be a cable TV customer to get their internet service. For example where I am, you can subscribe to Earthlink cable modem service without being a Time Warner cable TV subscriber. TWC will still come and install a cable line to your house and provide you a cable modem, but your service will be through Earthlink. TWC will also gladly give you the same service, but they charge $11 more a month than Earthlink if you do not subscribe to cable TV.
