Is there any way to fix the whine of my hard drive w/o RMAing?

Hard drive whine

Maxtor diamondmax 10 300 gb...
Is there a solution without RMAing? Because its going to be a big pain trying to find another hard drive to put my information on...

Replace the fan that's making that noise. No drive, not even a Maxtor, sounds that bad.

That's the hard drive.
It's louder than my video card fan too :laugh:
Woo, its like hearing a grand prix.

This hard drive does it whenever, it sometimes goes quiet, but then gets loud again.

Some HDDs can be set to a quiet mode - check on the software CD that came with the drive or on the mfr's web site.

There's spindle motor bearing wind there, but the growl is VERY strange. If that's not coming from a fan that drive isn't going to be around much longer.

Acoustic management (AMSET) quiets SEEKS only and would not calm this beast. It also robs performance. If you want performance you have to hear it like this pair.

EDIT: Those raptors are making the racket because there are two more below. I have two more to add for six and yes they're all raid0. :)

EDIT(2):

Can't hear it when the music is JAMMING!

Back up your data now! That hard drive is a goner so just rma it and get it over with. At least you caught it before it died completely.
