This was at their site."Delivering an impressive 260 horsepower and 302 lb.-ft. of torque, the 4.6L V-8 will satisfy your thirst for power. The single overhead cam design helps provide power output at a higher rpm and is designed for those who tend to push their vehicle. " Are they trying to say that their SOHC v8 is Better than DOHC v8 ?!?!? " for those who tend to push their vehicle"Wouldnt a DOHC engine give you a wider ranger of torque and acceleration?what the hell is going on here.

Well.. you are right. DOHCs puts out more hp and torque throughout the powerband. However, a DOHC V8 will be bigger in mass and size than a SOHC, not to mention they are more complex to design. And what's the biggest enemy of a fast eight cylinder? Weight. Why do you think so many manufacturers.. Ford, GM are still using OHC and push-rods in their trucks.

The GT is a SOHC motor, the Cobra is a DOHC motor, no they're not saying the GT is better than the cobra.

They're comparing the SOHC to the old 5.0, which isn't an OHC motor.

I like mine, though :)

link with nice animated pictures

edit: that's just one page of a lengthy article that goes over many different things such as variable timing technologies and the like. It's got lots of nice pictures. Click on "Intro" at the bottom of the linked page to go to the first of the article.

OHC, whether SOHC, or DOHC, is about lower friction and less moving parts. That said, the engines also enjoy a better operating range than a pushrod engine, make more horsepower per liter, are more economical and can typically out rev a pushrod engine.

Mercedes grasped the concept long ago, with the 450 SL, which was a SOHC V-8. (Single cam per bank)
