Lets say i wanted to make a secure folder for passwords. How would i go about doing that? Would i encrypt it or password it, or both, or what? Im at a complete loss here. Thanks guys.

Define "secure." What are you attempting to secure this folder from?

What operating system are you using?

Windows XP. Secure as in anyone who manages to get into my system might not be able to get into this folder. Secure so that if i accidentally stay logged on no idiot will find the folder and read my stuff. Well...you understand what i mean, right?

It seems kinda foolish, because if they really wanted theyd have my pass if they did manage to break in, but yeah... 😀

If someone has physical access to your machine AND you're logged in, there's little you can do to secure your files.

Secure is a Big and very general Word. There is No absolute secure, but security in relative terms can be Bad, Good, Very Good, etc.

The best method depends on the nature of the Network that is used and how the general Network security is set.

Example for WinXP Pro, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040

If you just worried about certain files. You place the ?dear? files in specific folders. There is a lot of shareware that can secure encrypted whatever specific folders and files.

Google for terms like Folder Lock, Folder Guard etc.

Example, http://www.snapfiles.com/downloadfind.php?st=folder+lock&action=s

:sun:

For passwords I'd use PasswordSafe.

If you're looking to sort of hide something I'd consider TrueCrypt. It creates encrypted volumes -- in other words think of another drive letter that has your encrypted data.

If you're looking for something very simple look at EncryptOnClick --> Very easy to use, can encrypt folders or files.

Okay, so you essentially want to secure your stuff so that even you (i.e. a bad guy logged in as you) can't get access to the data.

That's pretty paranoid, but it gives us a good definition.

For this you can't use Windows EFS (encrypting file system), because EFS assumes that the currently logged on user has access to the files that the currently logged on user encrypted. If we have to assume a bad guy could log on as you, that assumption isn't valid.

So you're going to need a third-party encryption tool, and for God's sake, don't store the encryption key on the machine!

I haven't used any of the products others mentioned, but PGP has a good reputation and is designed by someone who actually knows cryptography.

I would have to agree! Version 4.1 is the latest, I believe. Great utility!

truecrypt? opensource on-the-fly encryption.

Wow...that program is hardcore. I dont really understand it, but i read the manual. How come you have to select a size?

Truecrpyt is pretty cool...i finally got it. Is there any tips on which hash algorithms and encryption algorithms to use? i obviously want the most secure.

The most secure is to put your folder on a flash memory device and take it with you. I always prefer hardware solutions to software ones. Usually more reliable.

And if you lose that? Encrypting it and putting it on a flash drive isn't so bad...
