The people you meet are more than good enough to make several varieties of balanced parties. Plus they have their own quests. And loads of dialog.

"Butt Kicking for GOODNESS!!!!"

"Go for the Eyes Boo. Go for the EYES!"

"Jump on my Sword Evil. I won't be so Gentle"

"I'll Do it. For a Turnip"

"{Burp} Pardon. Turnip reflex."

"I can't. I'm allergic. Well, all right. I'm not That allergic."

Mass effect 1-3, Gothic 1-3(and Risen1)
While very different in graphics, gameplay and scenarios, they are good RPGs and if you liked BG, chances are, you will enjoy these games as well. Just IMHO and my own experience.

Um.... ME-1 Maybe. ME-2 - not so much. ME- 3 got a little bit back to the original. But none of these come even remotely close to the depth and breadth of Role playing in even IWD. The customization in the BG and IWD serieses are significant and worlds better than what you have in the ME universe.

Can't speak for Gothic as I haven't played them.

Personally, ME3 was the best of the series for me. ME2 comes second and ME1 comes the last, but still great, especially for the original concept, story and world lore. And Mass Effect series for me personally were much better than BG+IWD series. There are some aspects I really adore in BG though, but my judgement is definitely implied by my feelings of nostalgia for this game, because I played it in my childhood (although I replayed recently as well). Still though both ME and BG series bare very different atmospheres, if I had to choose which one is better, I'd choose ME. But the Planescape Torment beats them both in my eyes.

It comes down to what you want out of the game. For me the BG series was hands down superior to anything that has come out since. And from an RPG perspective, it totally eclipses the ME series (For me). But then i probably want different things from the game than you do. And so I respect your perspective.

Aye, I played IWD until I came upon some kind of a temple filled with strong giants. And since I was soloing as a mage (which worked more than fine in BG) I ragequit as well.

While I love the combat system of Infinite Engine, too much is too much. IWD is too combat oriented for my taste.

You solo'd BG with a mage? That seems like it would be very difficult.

How could you beat (for instance) the assassin who tries to kill you when you enter the Friendly Arm for the first time? Or how do you make it through the Naskell mines with a single mage?

One of the things I liked so much about the BG and IWD games was the tactical combat. If you just ran blind into every situation, you got owned a LOT. Not only did you have to scout out the encounters beforehand, but you had to be prepared, and you had to have a grasp of what worked and what didn't. This changed from combat to combat as different enemies actually used different spells and effects and actual Tactics. This wasn't Diablo where every MOB could be handled the same way. Rinse, lather, repeat...

And, although it may be possible to 'Solo' these games, I think you both miss a significant portion of the game, and completely miss the point. D&D was never intended to be a solo adventure. It was always supposed to be about a balanced party. And you really saw that in the BG, and Particularly the IWD series. The less balanced the party, the higher the degree of difficulty. One single fear spell would end a 'Solo' outing.

Save a lot. Die a lot. Rest after every single combat. Reload after every death. And still DIE A LOT.

You can solo almost any class but its very tough. Especially those battles where you're locked in a small room with a large gang of enemies.
In big multiroom dungeons you can hit & run with a combo of wands and ranged weapons. Bad guys turn dumb when you leave their line of sight. They also tend to piss away their good spells while you hide.

I remember using this is especially true in the last battle at the bottom of the cloakwood mines. The Wizard there would piss away all of his best spells while I hid in the adjoining rooms.
