Is there any reason to buy a car CD Changer anymore?

Are there any benefits to a car CD changer, or is it better to just rip all CDs to MP3s and buy a CD/MP3 deck? Granted, CD quality music is better than MP3 quality, but I'm assuming that it's harder to tell the difference in most cars, as opposed to a quality home theater system vs. a boombox.

Get a good Mp3 headunit.

Make sure it can play a wide range of bitrates, supports VBR and all that good stuff.

I would definitely get an MP3 one. They can run cds as well of course, and now you have the option to play MP3 cds. Sound quality should be perfectly fine for most people :)

Yeah I own a Pioneer CD/MP3 head unit, bought my sister a Clarion CD/MP3 unit, and I'm thinking of getting my dad one for Father's Day, since his car has a tape deck. Was just curious if I should even consider a CD changer.

heck, an ipod with a cassette adaptor is a better option than a cd changer

I need to research this. I didn't know about car units supporting that.

That's awesome!!

Only plus as I see it is that if you have a TON of prerecorded CDs, getting a changer might be more convenient than ripping them all to MP3. Otherwise, I'd say the MP3 route is the way to go.

I used to have a cd changer, and bought an MP3/CD head unit and am much happier with the MP3 player.

The only reason I don't like MP3 cd players is that it's very hard to scroll quickly and find a song you want as opposed to knowing what CD it's on.

depends on the player...alpine has a very easy and simple navigation structure... given that you name and order your files right

cd-changer... i always thought they were dumb

I suppose a car is a noisy enough environment that the decreased audio quality of MP3s won't matter too much, but I'm not going to bother to burn a seperate set of discs for my car. I'll stick to the changer. I have lots of CDs and very, very few mp3s.

Thats pretty cool. Wouldn't work for me though since work and school is only about 5min away. Half of that time would be booting XP. :p

IMO cd players/changers are done for, every brotha and his motha has an ipod/mp3player these days, cars should come with some type of standard ipod/mp3player dock.

This is definitely the way to go. I have a Pioneer 5500 MP3 deck and its great. It handles folders like discs in a changer. Also has good AUX input so you can hook it up to an iPod or whatever. But, a DVD deck would be better because of the capacity on DVDRs. 6 times the music per disc, which is something like 43 CDs. No changer will give you that kind of a library in your car.

No, that would be Windows 2000. XP boots much faster. :p
