Is there any reason that my mouth would break out w/ four sores suddenly?

I was very sick this past weekend. On Monday, four very painful sores broke out in my mouth. They're still there. Could this in any way be related to my sickness this past weekend? It was a stomach flu I'm sure...

EDIT: BTW I know that I should see a doctor if they persist, if they're still there mid-next week I'll make an appointment, but right now I'm doing some research at WebMD and others to see if these are related at all.

See, I told you sucking too much candy was bad for you! :D;)

Nah serious though, did you eat anything that would cause that? Cus you're not supposed to get FOUR just out of the blue...

Oh well, hope they go away really quickly! :)

I didn't eat ANYTHING Saturday, and on Friday I didn't eat anything past Lunch (which was only a sandwich), cuz that's when I started getting sick. On Sunday my appetite recovered late in the day, but I didn't eat anything unusual. Normally I have at least 2,500 calories a day.

Guys I'm perfectly straight...

Nah you know I'm just playin witcha. So did they just like pop-up all of a sudden? Or did they gradually appear? Dude, I would go see a doctor or something ASAP. I wouldn't want four of those suckers in my mouth at once. :(

Have you been under a lot of stress lately? That can do it sometimes.
Certain food gives my mother sores sometimes.
Have you been sharing glasses or eating utensils with someone?

cold sores can be caused by stress and/or lack of sleep. howt o get rid of them? you can go to the doctor and he will prescribe this paste (i forgot the name)... you apply it before you go to sleep and it's pretty nasty, but it basically will take it out pretty quickly (1-3 days?). get more rest, don't stress, that'll help. :) good luck.

It sounds like foot and mouth to me. It's going around. Another poster wanted to know how to nurse his feet.

I haven't gotten any play for about five weeks now. Just a dry spell, I guess. I haven't been sharing drinks or utensils with ANYONE because mono was going around my school and my friends and it was only a logical thing to do.

I've been under a TON of stress lately...

If you are lookin for a quick way to numb the pain, until you find a way to cure it, I'd get some Anbesol. Man that stuff is good. It just numbs your mouth wherever you put it. I found out about it about 6 years ago when I had braces.

For all you science buffs, the active ingredients are: Alcohol 70%, Benzocaine 6.4% and Phenol 0.5%

I'm sure you can find it at any drug store.

Sounds like there's the cause.

If it's really bad you should see the doc and get some medicine for it. :)

medicine? You don't need any medicine! Before you go to bed each night, take some salt, and rub it into your sores until it doesn't hurt anymore. Hell yeah it hurts like hell, but it'll help it heal faster. :) That's what I do to all my cold sores and they all go away in 2-3 days. Good luck! :)

Just to clarify:

Cold Sores = Herpes Simplex A. These are sores outside and around the mouth.
Canker Sores = NOT Herpes. These are sores inside the mouth. Sometimes they're white but they always hurt like hell.

There's a big difference between the two. Canker sores will go away eventually but if you've got cold sores, you've got herpes, and if you've got herpes you've got it for life. :)

Anyway, you can get some stuff at the drug store for canker sores that works pretty good. It's a gel with an anesthetic in it--has a numbing effect.

Canker sores can indeed be caused by stress, but also by eating too much spicy food or junk food. They should go away within a week though.

You said you had the stomach flu the previous weekend. Were you vomiting? If so, that is likely a cuase. Stomach acid will eat away at your teeth, gums and lips after vomiting. Enough irritation can cause canker sores. Also, Toolgirl is right, stress will cause this. One summer, six years ago, I woke up one morning to find about 8 or 9 canker sores starting in my mouth. I was barely after to eat or talk for about a week. I had very bad teeth at that time and the tension in my mouth was bad enough to cause a frequent canker sore here and there. However, I had a lot of stree on me that summer and it took its toll in my mouth. I went to a doctor who tested them (probably for Herpes but I'm not sure) and the tests all came back clean. He pretty much said "We (doctors) don't know why canker sores seem to pop up for no reason. Get some more rest and try to lighten the stress in your life." Btw, the test does not feel good. He took a long cotton swap (cue-tip) and dragged it across all the sores and then pushed down hard into the biggest sore. Not a fun experience at all. My sympathy goes out to you for dealing with this. As a side note, I haven't tried this but I have heard and read that an old remedy for canker sores that appears to be true is to rub your own ear wax onto the sores each night.

Forgot to add: I've also heard that some doctors speculate that if your body has just fought off a virus (perhaps a strain of the stomach flu) that the virus may mutate before being completely defeated and manifast as a canker sore.

Ok, here's *excatly* why you had a cold sore outbreak.

Your immune system became overstressed/overworked fighting off your flu (or whatever you had this weekend). This allowed the herpes virus to take advantage of your weakened immune system and flourish. Normally, unless they're triggered by the sun, stress, dehydration, etc. your body can keep them in check. Notice that all of those triggers have something in common--they create a load on your immune system and overall health and your body was unable to take care of everything that was going on...and there you go, the virus overcomes your body's defenses (for a short period) when it's busy defending itself against something else, or just plain recovering.

The severity of an illness can determine how bad your outbreak is--pay attention and you'll find a correlation between how much stress/sickness you're having...and the severity of the resulting outbreak a few days later.

luv2chill is right - are these cankers or cold sores? Very different things.

I get cankers from stress, so that makes sense. I treat them with mouthwash (ouch), a medicine called Fletcher's, and finally a medicine called Kanka. I use the Kanka before I eat because it coats/protects/and anesthetizes the canker.
