Is there any reason not to give out the VIN # of a car I'm selling?

I posted my car on craigslist last night, this morning I get like 15 emails saying they want to buy my car (yay!). every other person asks for the vin, is it okay to give it to them? I'm assuming they just want to run a carfax on it, correct?

Also what do I need to do to sell a car in terms for forms and stuff. I'm in California.

When selling a California registered vehicle, the registered owner of record must:

Release ownership by signing on line one of the title.
If the vehicle is, or was financed, a name will be in the legal owner section and their releasing signature is required on line two.

Provide the purchaser with evidence of a valid smog certification.
Smog certificates are good for 90 days from the date of inspection. The smog certification is not required if the owner or buyer signs a statement that smog certification was submitted with renewal fees within 90 days prior to the transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).

Provide the odometer mileage if the vehicle is less than 10 years old (Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form, REG 262). If the title does not have a designated space for this information, a REG 262 reporting the odometer mileage must be signed by both the seller and buyer. The REG 262 cannot be copied. An original must be submitted. To obtain a form by mail, call DMV's automated phone service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-777-0133. To speak to an operator call between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, Pacific Standard Time, or pick one up from your local DMV. If calling from outside the United States, please call 916-229-0370.

Complete a Notice of Release of Liability (REG 138) and mail the notice to the DMV address on the form. The seller is responsible for reporting the change of ownership to DMV within 5 days from the date of sale. It is important to do this as soon as possible, because after DMV updates the information from the REG 138, you will be cleared from future liability on the vehicle. The purchaser is responsible for reporting the change of ownership to DMV within 10 days from the date of purchase.

I doubt there's any problem with giving them the VIN number. They can get it off your car anyways if they come to see it.

I wouldn't buy a used car without a VIN #.

I had one experience a few years ago where a guy told me he had owned the car for a year and used nothing but premium in it (though it shouldn't take premium..but whatever).

Got the VIN, ran a carfax; he had put about 5 miles on the car since purchasing it at auction a month prior.

SO yea, no VIN, no sale.

It's VIN..

Not VIN number

Not VIN #

It's VIN... Vehicle Identification Number.

While we are on this topic, it's NIC

Not NIC card

Not NIC network card

It's NIC.. Network Interface Card

And I wouldn't purchase a used vehicle without first checking the VIN either.

I'd tell them to come and take a look at the car and you'll give them the VIN number. I don't know what you can do with just the VIN but that many people all at once has got to be some sort of scam...

Give them the VIN. Any schmo could get it just by looking at your dashboard anyway.

On a random note, you know how car dealerships will tack on extra charges for etching the VIN into your windshield? Make sure the VIN on the windshield actually matches the one on your dash/door.

I've done a little claims adjusting on wrecked vehicles, and occasionally the VIN is similar but not an exact match, which makes the "feature" (which they will charge you out the ass for) completely worthless.

No, he just priced the car way too low.

actually I did, I priced it at $3750 OBO which is a great deal for car. The reason is the rear bumper is dented from a 5 mph read ending. (I'm ahead from the insurance money so I priced to low so I can sell it quick)

You should give out the VIN. There is no reason not to. I would go so far as to say that you should include the VIN in your advertisement so that prospective buyers can check it freely (without being forced to contact you beforehand, which could discourage some) in order to make sure the vehicle has a clean title.

Whichever can pay you with guaranteed funds (cashiers check) first.

Remember to issue a Bill of Sale and to specify "AS IS - NO WARRANTY"

How about e-mailing the lot of them saying you have 20 people who want to buy the car, and asking for a higher price. Sell it to whomever is wiling to pay the most. Short of that, I'd start with the one who contacted you first or the closest to you.
