Is there any real problem in not turning on your brand new notebook after purchase for say 2 months?

I'm guessing its not good for the battery?

How about the notebook as a whole minus battery?

No big deal. Even battery shouldn't be any issue.

I'm sure a lot of notebooks sit on CompUSA/BB/CC etc shelves for longer than that. If they did then they would have to sell laptops with Freshness Dates and Best if Consumed by XX date printed on the side!

As long as you give it a work out, make sure everything's running well and check for any problems before you put it in the closet, in case you have to exchange it or service it.

Well, apart from the fact that its a damn shame :). The battery it came with should be fully discharged so thats not a problem unless you charged it. Personally, I would have at least turned it on to check if everything was okay first.

It's not a problem for the battery. Lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries are not shipped discharged - fully discharging either type of battery results in lower capacity and shorter lives - but they also do not self-discharge very quickly at all. They are usually shipped with only a moderate charge, and this is usually of maintaining the minimum voltage for up to a year of shelf time.

As others pointed out, it is always a good idea to check for problems immediately after you get a new system to make sure that the system is in fact what you ordered and that it works correctly.
