Is there any problem that would cause 2D games to not work?

My cousin is having a strange problem with his computer where it seems like 2D games aren't working, but 3D games still work. The problematic games in particular are Starcraft and Worms: World Party. The computer specs AFAIK are that it's an AMD 1GHz on an ECS K7S5A, 256MB DDR RAM, MSI Geforce2 GTS 32MB, running Win2K.

I haven't seen it in person, but he describes the problem like this:

Game CD is inserted into CD-ROM drive, autoplay menu pops up like usual, he clicks on Play. Then the screen kind of blinks, as if it's going to change display resolution and start the game, but instead it comes back to windows with the game minimized on the taskbar. Clicking on it on the taskbar doesn't do anything, or makes it do that blinking thing again. This happens with both games (and these are the only games he's tried that I know of).

Also, these games were working fine very recently, but somehow suddenly stopped working. I don't know everything he's done with the computer, and I haven't been able to see it myself, so it's tough for me to diagnose the problem. I was hoping maybe somebody out there has seen or heard of a similar problem, and could provide some help? I had never heard of such a problem, so I couldn't give him much advice.

Things I suggested that he has already tried:
Rebooting (duh)
Reinstalling the games
Installing the latest Detonator drivers

Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance...

Ok, update:

If he sets his Windows display resolution to 640x480, the games work. The games also run at this resolution (640x480), so this means that the games work when they don't need to change the resolution. It seems that the problem is somehow related to the games trying to change the display resolution??

Has anybody ever heard of a problem like this? I don't know what could be causing this to happen, and any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

All I could suggest would be ensure he has the latest video drivers and perhaps do a re-install of DirectX8.

The problem isn't resolution... I run Starcraft w/ Win2K and DX8 w/ a 1152x864
desktop, no problems. Perhaps changing the bit-depth of the desktop (i.e.
32-bit to 16-bit)

You need to find out what changes he made to the system wat or before this issue occured. Did he update the video drivers, Directx X and such. It is a driver related issue. Mitzi waw correct. Uninstall the games update the video driver and reinstall them then reinstall DirectX
