I was just sitting here thinking about the upcoming ATi Radeon IGP 320/430 and I frankely am not optimistic on it's chance in the market especially considering that the South Bridge is not going to be out for a while. When I think of the current picture for both the P4 and athlon Chipset market, there is only one feature that distinguishes the Radeon IGP from the competition, the Integrated video and the Audio (but again that's not going to be here until late summer, early fall). We have in the integrated market KM266/P4M266, SiS 740/650, and of course nForce (for the Athlon only). I'm not going to even mention nForce because it will blow everything away with Twinbank, so the real question is how it stacks up to KM266, and SiS 740. I personally feel that SiS has a very good part on their hands, because all 3 chipsets are bandwidth limited, it comes down to the cores themselves.
KM266/P4M266, is Savage4 3D and Savage2000 2D. In other words, a barely if at all functional T&L unit, and the worst 2D in the industry. I think tha VIA does not have a winning part here. There is hope because IIRC, KM333/P4M333 is supposed to have a new Graphics core with 2nd generation T&L, and higher clock speeds, but I haven't heard anything recently about it, heck KM266 is just barely coming out now.
SiS 740/650 has SiS 315, which has a fully functional 2nd gen T&L unit, and has DVD iDCT, and to top it off, in an AGP card is between a MX200 and MX400. This is a very cool feature and something to take note of. But anyway, the Radeon IGP is basically a bandwidth crippled Radeon VE, which means no Hyper Z, no T&L, it will have DVD iDCT but frankely, I just don't think there is any potential for it until it is at least equiped with a R7500 prefferably a R8500 core. And to make things even tougher for the P4 side of things, rumors have it that 845GL which is slated for a May/June release, right when the Radeon IGP is supposed to be hitting the streets, is rumored to have signficiantley better performance, and I'd bet that it is going to come awful close to the SiS 650, maybe bypass it. To top it off, SiS 740/650 is prolly cheaper than as well Radeon IGP. Is there any support for ATi's entry into the chipset market? Right now, not for me. What do you guys think?
