If I wanted to be self sufficient/not pay for anything like provide my own power, water, food, entertainment etc.. I could easily do those things but it seems like for internet access you would have to pay, access-4-free.com is an option but what if I want to be able to connect directly with no middle man. Is there a way to do this?

Yes, but you need a tin foil hat.

You're going to need the following items:

1. Large amount of high-grade fibre-optic cable.
2. A spade.
3. A pair of pliers.
4. Your "My First Cable Splicing Kit".
5. A "Get Out Of Jail Free" card.
6. Some lube for prison.

if you are wealthy, then you could pay to have fiber run to your location, purchase and installation of required switches, routers.. and pay a monthly service fee for connection to the telco.
but this costs $$$, the answer is no you can't do this for free. as was said, the internet is nothing but middlemen. little isp's selling dialups, pay their own isp for the bandwidth, and that company may be leasing lines from some other company, etc etc.

this is america == captialism give up your free hippie dreams

Dude, there are public wifi access spots all over the country. Hell, I live out in the middle of nowhere, and even WE have a public wifi spot downtown. Stop bugging us, and go find one!
