If I wanted to be self sufficient/not pay for anything like provide my own power, water, food, entertainment etc.. I could easily do those things but it seems like for internet access you would have to pay, access-4-free.com is an option but what if I want to be able to connect directly with no middle man. Is there a way to do this?

Yes, but you need a tin foil hat.

The Internet is nothing but middle men; they're just all connected together.

How does that work for phone service?

You want to join a network, just like phone, power, water, sewer networks. And just like with them you have to pay to connect to their network either directlly or through a middleman like an ISP.

You can actually make a decent living off reselling dialup.

If people are willing to pay $23.95/mo for AOL or MSN dialup, it should be easy getting them to switch to $11.99 and you earn a small slice of that pie :p

You could lay your own fibre line to a major NOC, but then you'd still need to pay for upkeep of your own line.
