Is there any policy from MS that deals with upgrading OS discs?

If you purchase an OS when it first comes out they end up releaseing many updates over time. If you go to reinstall the OS some time later you have to go back and get all those updates. Does MS have a system of you sending in legally purchased OS discs to get the newer ones that already have the updates incorporated?

No, but you can do it yourself. Google or search these forums for "slipstream".

Yea I know of slipstreaming. It just seems that for the amount of money you spend on their product they could help out a little. Especially when they sell a faulty product.

if you've got a stand-alone windows install it's generally going to be easiest to let the windows update site or the automatic updates client to pickup your updates. Since the service packs are cumulative you dont need to go and install all of the updates you've ever installed (just the latest service pack and any minor updates since than).

They provide the fixes for free and a means of integrating those fixes with your original install cd. Any user who is sophisticated enough to reformat his/her hard drive is sophisticated enough to slipstream and burn a new installation cd.

:Slaps hand on forehead:

Every modern OS is going to require periodic updates (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc.); this doesnt make any of them "faulty products". When there is an issue discovered updates are released for free. I would consider this more than just "helping you out a little".

If you dont want to (or dont have the bandwidth) to download the updates they periodically package them up and will send them to you for free on CD.

they fix a product they sold that didnt work properly. I am not flaming MS I am just commenting on something I wish existed. If my truck has a recall they fix it. They dont send me the new part and have me put it in.

Try automatic updates. It's like your truck fixing itself whenever there is a factory recall.

Besides, installing updates on a $200 piece of software is a little bit differant than installing a part on a $20,000 truck.

I'm glad that will help; I realize how big of a hassle it can be to setup a new machine and have it infected with some worm before you can even get it patched. Another suggestion is if you are running XP you can turn on the built-in firewall before connecting it to the internet. Even before SP2 the built-in firewall is sufficient to keep the machine safe while you download and install any new updates.

There is a CD that M$ gave away earlier this year that has all the critical and security updates for all versions of Win from 98 thru XP that pretty much would get you updated thru Oct. 2003. There were plenty of threads about it on the techie forums and the M$ site. You snooze - you lose...
. Perhaps someone you know has a copy of it.

Have you tried asking MS? I know that they start shipping newly-produced OS media, with the latest SP pre-installed along with it, and I believe that they also do sell OS media-only replacements for a nominal fee (assuming, of course, that you already have a legal license for the software in question).

So I don't think that it would be out of the question, if you were to simply pay the media-replacement/shipping fee, to get them to send you a "new" CD, complete with the newest integrated SP level. Try it.
