I'm looking to buy some cheap RAM, I've found (some acme company called Kreton), the specs are:
DDR-16-512VT - 512 MB 400MHZ DDR PC-3200 16 Chip - CL 2.5 - VT/Starex Series
Now, I noticed they mentioned its 16 chip (probably means double sided) and was wondering if this is going to have any performance effects and/or will I be able to run it dual channel?

16 chip will be double sided. Yes you will be able to run it in dual channel. The performance effects between single and double sided are quite minimal. I remember reading an article a while back here.

It may not be too relevant for many peoples systems now but still makes interesting reading.

Thanks George Powell. I'm trying to get a better technical understanding though, on how the 16 chip RAM differs from the 8 chip RAM, in this case single side Vs. double sided stick.
To my understanding 8 chip is the "newer" trend, and that is what's being mainly used today, I don't understand why would Kreton make double sided sticks... Is it cheaper assembly or what?
And just want to make sure, that if I get this RAM I can expect "normal" performance of a modern value RAM, and not get the performance of a 3-4 yeard old value RAM.

Just get some PQI Power series RAM for it. No worries about that stuff. Ive never heard of the brand you're talking about. $40 cant be all that much more than that generic stuff.

Hi, 16 mem chips was a method of getting double the amount of memory on the stick using the available chips. As the larger capacity chips become available or cheaper they go back to 8 chips. 8 or 16 is practically identical in operation. Look at a few sticks. Sometime the artwork is on the back but not used. Hope this helps a little, Jim
