Is There Any Hope In Choosing A LCD

I?ve been on the hunt in trying to choose a 24? LCD and it seems impossible. After reading many reviews and posts I narrowed it down to the BenQ FP241WZ and the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC. It was pretty hard in choosing which one, but after I read about the blackouts that can occur with the BenQ, I took it off my list because that is totally unacceptable for a $600+ LCD. I thought I had my mind made up and was going to get the Dell, but I then stumbled upon this post in the Dell forum: http://www.dellcommunity.com/support...cending&page=1

Apperantly there is a really bad ghosting issue with the monitor. I know every monitor well have ghosting, but this sounds like it?s an actual defect. After reading this, I was pretty pissed off. It seems like manufactures don?t care any more about their products. How can a company sell a $600+ LCD and think its ok if has a couple of defects. Keep in mind, I?m not talking about ghosting or dead pixels, I can understand that, but for a monitor to have blackouts or defects with color, it?s not acceptable.

I?m completely lost and have no idea what LCD?s to look at anymore. I?m starting to think that I should just not buy one and keep my 19? CRT that I?ve been using for 6 years. Does anyone have any guidance? Thanks.

I went on the same search and found that 24" technology is just not quite there yet when it comes to having a good fast gaming LCD. Ended up with a 22" Samsung 2ms 226BW and am happy to give up the 2 inches for half the price and better quality.

For the record, I got a Dell 2407WFP-HC four days ago and it doesn't have the ghosting issue (which seems to be a problem with the overdrive circuit). This problem has just recently arisen, and I have the impression that there is a bad batch or monitors out there.

If you really want a 24-inch monitor, you can wait for this problem to be solved by Dell. Monitoring the Dell Forums is a good idea, and I did so for months before ordering mine...Then I place my order, and suddently this ghosting issue arises. :Q

Luckily, I seem to have avoided the bad batch. But I would not have ordered in the middle of this new ghosting storm.

Don't forget that people that post on the Dell Forums are only those who have a problem.

If you want a safe bet in a 24-incher, you can wait for the new Samsung 245T, which has the same panel as the Dell. You will be able to buy it at a B & M store with a zero-risk return policy. It will cost more than the Dell though.

OK, I have done so much research in this area, and your in luck, that your sticking to your guns with a 24 inch display. That market is an easy one to figure out. I will put it simple for you. I have played with a few of them over the last few years. I own now the Samsung 244t. I LOVE IT. I play UT, HL, WoW, NR2003, etc etc etc. No lag, no ghosting, Hidef TV from Cable is supurb as is all TV, analog is a bit stretched but you get used to it. I currently am going to buy the Acer 26 incher and see how that is, But, all in all, the samsung 244t was worth every $850 at time of purchase back in sept of 2006.

I know the challenge of selecting the right monitor. I read the forums for many months before buying my 24 incher, an NEC2470. I was agonizing between a Dell and an LG but went w/the NEC. I know, it cost $800 (at least did when I bought it a few months ago) but I was put off by the continuing pop up of new problems of the other brands, the sometimes challenge of product support, questions of whether someone got the good version or the bad version and the need to make adjustments and changing of settings to achieve the proper color settings.
I made the right decision. The NEC had correct settings out of the box. I just plugged it in and I have not had to do another thing with it since then. It is the perfect monitor b/c I never notice it. Colors are true, I have no tearing, smearing or other defects in fast FPS games and text is sharp. Pay more and never have to worry about your monitor again.

Message to Pain, from my note above you can see I think 24" panels do fine. Almost all 22" panels are TNs and I have no interest in that technology. I think I'm in the sweet spot.
Cheers to all and happy gaming,

Suggesting a 22" in place of a 24" is not really good advice. If you are going to go with a 1680x1050 panel, it should be a 20" panel and not a 22" IMO. All they do to increase the size on a 22" is increase the pixel pitch (as opposed to increasing the number of pixels), which makes the picture less sharp. So, from going from 24" to 22" you are giving up 2" AND picture quality. There is a reason it's cheaper...

I'm personally pretty happy with my Dell 2407WFP (non-HC)... It isn't perfect, but neither was my 2005FPW or any of the CRTs I had before that. I have come to the conclusion that you would probably have to spend a whole lot of money if you want to get the 'perfect' display.

btw... Welcome to AT forums. :)

I have a 2407 A04, and there is ghosting, but VERY minor. From what I heard, it's from the overdrive circuit. It is correctable by lowering the colour intensities from 100 (default) to around 80-85. When I first got it, there was a LOT of green ghosting on white pages and red ghosting on dark pages. After turning the intensities down, it is unnoticable unless I actually look for it, like my 1 dead pixel in the corner. It's also really bright , so lowering the colours is a good idea anyways.

The BenQ deal breaker was the price and unreliability. Back when I was deciding what to buy, the BenQ was coming out with new revisions every month or so, and people were shipping their monitors all over just to get it updated. No way I'd buy into that garbage. The NECs also suffer from reliability issues, and the Gateway is plain unreliable. I think they stopped supporting it or something, and the 1 year warranty speaks a lot.
