Is there any hope for 3d gaming monitors like the iZ3D?

Why isn't the industry putting more resources into 3d gaming monitors like the iZ3D?

I once bought a pair of stereoscopic glasses and a few games just blew me away. Battlefield 1942 was absolutely amazing. The 3d was so real i felt like I was going to fall out of my chair and every once in awhile I had to stop and take them off and laugh a bit because the experience was surreal.
Unfortunately most games weren't supported and the majority of those that did work had double vision and made me go cross-eyed.
The truth is if this 22" monitor worked very well in most games I would dump my 24" Dell widescreen for $400 and buy this one for even $700 and just work in windows on a smaller lcd. That's how impressive I fealt this experience was when it worked.

So what gives? Seems like a few companies have been working on these types of technology but never enough to break through. Am I unique in having the desire to dump money into this sort of thing?

The major issue is they are gimmicky and game companies don't want to put the resources into supporting a screen a couple of hundred people (at most) have for gaming.

It's the whole chicken and the egg thing.

Until there's demand for such screens to be made large scale, say movies can be viewed in 3d, I doubt the gaming market will be getting much of a boost. It'll surely break ahead in terms of progress once it comes about, but from a business standpoint, like Denithor said, there aren't going to be many people that use it, so why build/code to support them?

I would like to see this eventually hit mainstream, sooner than later, though. If money was no object, I'd certainly purchase that monitor. But like others have said, it isn't practical at this point because there are bugs, unsupported games and requires some tweaks. That doesn't mean some people out there are not enjoying it, it just means for the average consumer, it doesn't have that stamp of stability, longevity and support which makes it an expensive potential paperweight at some point in the future.

These stereoscopic systems have a lot of potential, but that particular monitor sucks for the price. The actual panels it uses are TNs (seemingly rather low end ones too), and LCD tech in general is a poor platform for this since the motion blur will be far more prominent than usual.

Someone in another thread was talking about shutter glasses and 120hz monitors. Apparently it works.. I'm skeptical about how it looks when each eye sees a black screen half the time

i am dreaming of a "wall-filling" (say 15ft x 9ft) monitor since one of the biggest factors making the experience "life-like" is actually the field-of-view, size of the monitor. IMHO it would be way more impressive once OLED or some new technique comes up...and then "unroll" your new monitor and nail it on the wall so it fills up a whole side of your room :)

Combine this with 3D (as in imax, where they also combined the size w/ the 3d)...and then let's play WoW or whatever game you have in mind:)

(For added semi-realism there would be nothing wrong just *standing* in front of this screen)

I did some experiments earlier w/ various 3d techniques....but IMHO they all sooner or later are limited by the small screen-size and give rather an "fish tank" 3d effect. The other alternative would be putting more development/research in eye-pieces which generate this whole 180 deg. FOV as in VR. Too bad this is not mainstream....i just dont understand why.

Meh, I am thinking a projector screen, or a rolled up wall sized monitor in 2d like flexy said. Imatation 3d is not enough... and in addition to the monitor a holographic CUBE that shows REAL 3d inside its bounds. Which would be helpful for space strategy sims and thats about it :)
