Is there any harm in putting this in a desk drawer and using that as my "case"

There might be issues with em radiation or something, and excessive dust. Is there any particular reason you wouldn't use a normal case and vent the airflow or something? Or even take the side panels off a traditional case or something.

It's the size of the drawer I want to fit this in. Really want to keep using a full atx case and can't find anything else shallow enough (other than GMC Toast)

Dust is the only issue with the HTPC tech station. Well, that and there isn't a solid mount for the PSU or Optical but there are rails for the HDDs.

Only two things come to mind, RF noise interfering with other devices like radios and fire should something short like wiring, rare, it isn't contained inside a case, but a drawer where it could start a fire.

If I was doing that I would go to home depot and buy a shelf for $20, cheaper and same result.

RF noise shouldn't be an issue unless you have a crappy sound card. Dust is the only concern but its the same with most cases. I know many people who run there systems without cases and spread out on there desk. As long as the system is getting adequate airflow to keep things cool your fine.

there's definitely issues with EMI if you try to get the unit FCC-certified.

but normally, it's like an acrylic case or a splattered-across-the-desktop "Quentin Tarantino style" build - EMI ends up not being a problem. unless you have an RF lab in the same building, and maybe if your network is wireless.

the worse that can happen is you'll drill a hole in the back of the desk for cable routing, or realize it's too easy to spill coffee on, or actually spill coffee on. then you can always move the parts to normal case.

plus, if you wanted to, you could easily fashion some brackets for the optical drive and psu with a vise, hacksaw and file, drill and some drill bits, and the right nuts and bolts to do the job. They have a selection of L brackets and mending plates at places like the Home Depot so it would be an easy mod.

Only thing is that the steel or aluminum might be slightly thicker than whats used in a typical case so you might have to use longer screws.
