Is there any disadvantage to owning a 4k tv vs a 1080p one?

I have a 40" 1080p television that I use as my primary desktop and gaming monitor and I'm thinking of getting a 55"-60" tv so I can read text more easily when web browsing. But here's the thing, my gpu isn't powerful enough to game at higher than 1080p and my consoles (Wii U, 360 etc) only output at 720p. I remember playing original Wii games in 480p on my 1080p tv and the upscaling made the picture look worse. Can I expect the same with 720p Wii U games on a 4k television?

I hear people ask all the time if 1080p content looks better on a 4k tv and I believe the answer is no. But does 1080p content look worse is my question. If it is, then I'll get a 55-60" 1080p tv instead of 4k one.

Worse than what? A 480p TV? Is that because the 480p TV was smaller?

The issue then is pixel density. 480p looks worse on a large screen because the pixel density is much lower.

When you're talking 60", depending on how far away you sit from the monitor, you're going to need high res (hardware and content) to maintain a high quality sharp high res picture.

I have a feeling you're not going to like low res content on a large 60" monitor regardless if the native resolution of the panel is 1080p or 4k.

In that case I would recommend the 4k for such a large screen size because of pixel density of the panel. Especially if you sit close.

As far as content, that will be more available in the future as content delivery technology improves. (ex. you upgrade your hardware specs to be able to game at 4k someday) Then your panel will already be ready for that content.
